2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Adaptation, June 13, 2002
This review is from: Lady Windermere's Fan [VHS] (VHS Tape)
(First of all I must point out the mistake that has been made - this is not the 1925 version of Lady Windermere's Fan, but it is the 1985 version.)

I am extremely dissapointed in this release of Oscar Wilde's play. For one thing the acting was poor, and the characters are EXTREMELY dull. This in turn will lead to the audience's boredom to the film, and those who have never seen the play before will not realize the whole point and importance behind the characters at all.

But what really irritates me to no end is not even the actors - it is the cinematography. Quite frankly it appears as though the camerman left the set while the camera sat still filming everything. And when different shots are actually done they are amazingly unrealistic. It may as well have been shot with a inexpensivehome video camera! The picture itself is extremely low quality and contributes no cinematic beauty to the movie.

The only thing I did appreciate about this was that Wilde's play was kept completely intact. Everything totally followed the script. I certainly do not believe that a classic play like this should be changed or added to any, especially the dialogue.

Who would I reccommend this film to? Absolutely no one. Not even those who have a great interest in theater or Oscar Wilde - chances are you will be pretty ticked after watching it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story - Terrible sound quality, November 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Lady Windermere's Fan [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Since Lady Windermere's Fan is one of my favorite plays, it was very frustrating to try to watch (or more accurately to try listening to) the garbled and distorted sound on the VHS tape. It really is a delightful and thought provoking story by Oscar Wilde whose ideals seem to transcend all time, making it just as relevent today as it was at the time of it's writing.
