Book Description

Collins New Naturalist October 6, 1994
The author assimilates information about ladybirds, discussing their structure, life histories, food, enemies, habitats, colours and patterns, genetics and evolution. He also sheds light on the phenomenon of cannibalism in ladybirds and the recent discovery of a "feminist" bacterium that kills eggs destined to produce males, but not those destined to produce females. Finally he discusses the use and potential use of ladybirds as biological control agents, how they are under threat from man, and what we can do to conserve them.

This review is from: Ladybirds (Collins New Naturalist) (Paperback)
Anyone who thinks ladybirds (aka ladybugs) are their favourite insect should read this book. Discover, for instance, that the larvae of several species, as soon as they hatch out, eat up a couple of siblings before going out into the wide world to look for aphids. Apart from being a fascinating read, this is a comprehensive scientific account of the ladybird species of Britain. A little scientific knowledge is assumed in some chapters. I would recommend it thoroughly to naturalists and anyone else keen to know more about ladybirds.
