Book Description

May 18, 2010 3 - 5 yearsLadybug Girl

Lulu loves the beach. Well, she’s never been there before, but she knows she will love it. And then she sees the ocean and it is big and loud and rough. That’s okay—Lulu wanted to build sand castles and fly her kite with Bingo anyway. But while they are building their sand castle, the sneaky ocean comes in and tries to steal Lulu’s favorite pail. This is a job for Ladybug Girl!

Lulu conquers her fear of the ocean when she remembers that Ladybug Girl can do anything, in this gorgeously illustrated companion to the popular series.

Six Fun Activities for Ladybug Girl at the Beach: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2010 In the fourth book in the delightful Ladybug Girl picture book series, brave Lulu and Bingo, her pudgy Basset Hound sidekick, make their first trip to the ocean. Expectations run high as Lulu imagines sandcastles, kite flying, ice cream, and of course, that first swim. But as Lulu races to the water's edge, and feels the power and pull of the crashing waves, she gets scared. Everybody else seems to be enjoying the water, why can't she? This breezy story is just the right confidence-builder for little landlubbers with big dreams, but cold feet. --Lauren Nemroff

A Look Inside Ladybug Girl at the Beach

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 1—With her antennae quivering and her wings shimmering, Lulu (aka Ladybug Girl) and her basset hound find sun and sand on their first trip to the beach. There's a problem, though; the too-big ocean, too-loud noises, and too-tall waves are a bit intimidating. "Lulu takes a few steps backward. Bingo barks at the waves." While her brother runs for the water and her parents bask in the sun, Lulu's courage fails, and she begins a round of activities designed to help her avoid the ocean. She builds a sand castle, flies her kite, begs for ice cream, takes a long walk across the beach, and digs for pirate treasure. Young readers may recognize the swing of Lulu's emotions—will she ever enter the water? It takes an emergency—a lost pail in the waves—to bring forth her courage and move her knee-deep into ocean water. Suddenly Ladybug Girl "loves the beach!" Cartoon figures on a background of summer pastels fill illustrations; Bingo's floppy, swinging ears follow the bend of grass in the wind as the hound stretches out in a series of naps across the sand. A welcome new adventure for Ladybug Girl fans.—Mary Elam, Learning Media Services Plano ISD, TX

5.0 out of 5 stars At the Beach Review May 24, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The series just continues to get better and I can't wait for the next ones to come out...

And my daughter (3 1/2) just loves it, like Dresses Up, she took this book too to Daycare to share and show everyone, they even read it during their storytime. This book is clearly a new favorite to the list.

A day at the beach, what can be better? And while Lulu is all excited and ready to play in the ocean, it turns out to be more scarier then she thought. So while or before Lulu learns to overcome her fear, the book follows all her activities at the beach.

I don't want to give away too much of a spoiler, but this book serves well to illustrate the fun that can be had at the beach but a lesson and in over coming fear. I loved the front and back inside panals of illustration before the story actually starts and at the end too.

For the few who somehow managed to be disappointed by Dresses Up, you'll find your faith in the series restored with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daughter loves her Ladybug Girl books! June 9, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
We saw that a new book- Ladybug Girl goes to the Beach, was coming out. Since our little Ladybug fan at home loves her Ladybug Girl books- we had to get it! It continues the story of Ladybug girl and her experience being at the beach. Told from a child's perspective, the story illustrates the exploration and occasional uncertainty that children feel, when experiencing something new- such as going to the beach for the first time!

We give it a strong two thumbs up and look forward to more Ladybug Girl books!

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this series June 22, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My daughter is an avid Lady Bug girl reader. In fact her alter ego is now Lady Bug Girl when she needs to be brave. I really enjoyed this book because it goes along with trying something new and that even if you are a little scared at first, if you try it you might find you like it. Great story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A winner for summer August 12, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My daughter (4) enjoys this book it has spurred a number of good talks at bedtime. It addresses a child's emotional experience seeing the ocean... excitement, awe, and fear.

One of the things I love about this series is that the author really captures how children entertain themselves...LuLu plays with sticks, digs, talks to her dog. I find it really beautiful.

I did buy a copy of this to keep at our beach house...the library down there didn't have it. If I was only going to buy one LB Girl book, I'd get Bumblebee Boy...

3.0 out of 5 stars Some of the Charm of Ladybug Girl has Waned July 4, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I love the first Ladybug Girl book and Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy, but this book seems to lack a little "something" in comparison. My kids asked for the first two books to be read repeatedly for week after week. This one did not garnish the same degree of enthusiasm for retelling.
