Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This cleverly engineered, invitingly illustrated volume takes the idea of a story line literally, striking an ideal balance between the abstract and the concrete aspects of reading. Its heroine, a ladybug in search of a resting place, is reproduced on a separate, diecut bit of sturdy cardstock, so that when the text and pictures indicate new segments of the ladybug's journey (from under a stone and into a flower pot; across the garden shed and toward a purring cat, etc.), the reader can simulate the action. The type is set in curving lines, tracing the character's flight on each page and steering the reader toward a diecut opening through which the cardstock ladybug enters the next spread. This simple but surprising way of advancing the plot receives a suitably dramatic backdrop with Fowler's luxuriant full-spread art, which agreeably and without excess sentiment anthropomorphizes Ladybug along with beetle, slug and other members of the insect kingdom. A pattern for making replacement ladybugs is prudently included. Ages 2-6. BOMC main selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for little ones!, April 13, 2000

My 2 1/2 yr old grandson absolutely loves this book and its story about the ladybug. We have to read it over and over and over. He asks many questions about the different characters in the story. We've had this book for 6 months and haven't lost ladybug yet!

I am a substitute teacher for elementary and preschool kids and bring this along when the class is first grade or under. I have read this to at least 100 kids and they all love it. The kindergardners I had today begged me to read it again. Its great for describing positions (over, down, etc.) and the simple plot easily creates discussion. Highly recommended. One preschool group said it was magic. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Ladybug's a winner at our house, July 28, 2005

This review is from: Ladybug on the Move (Hardcover)
We got this book as a special treat for our (almost) 3-year old daughter while on vacation. She loves it! She giggles every time the ladybug slides under the door on one page and ends up right in front of the cat on the next page. We have't quite gotten to actually reading the story that goes along with all the ladybug's activities as our daughter is too involved with having the ladybug jump from one page to the next.

I didn't give this book a 5 for the following reasons:
-the slits that the ladybug slides through are not reinforced, so I anticipate a ripped page or two in our near future.
-the ladybug is also just thick paper, so probably not the best for longevity.
-the slits are also not very well marked and are almost exactly the size of the ladybug, so our daughter does have some difficulty with getting the ladybug through . Just a little difficult for toddler hands, so it is not the best book for her to manuever alone. Maybe in a few months or so it will be easier for her.

All in all, a great purchase, just a little more delicate than I would have expected. Would definitely purchase it again, and would recommend it!
