2.0 out of 5 stars Piano Background Music
The "old time gospel" is all well and good but, what I want/need to know is what is that beautiful piano background music that meanders so eloquently throughout the movie and where can I get a recording/copy of it?!

If you took a chance with the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack and loved it you should do the same here. Not because the type of music is similar (no bluegrass to be found), but because it (like O Brother) is a compilation put together by T-Bone Burnett.

Unlike the O Brother soundtrack, this features many upbeat songs by artists from the 1930s to today (including a great Nappy Roots song, "Trouble In The World," that will be coming soon to a radio near you). I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, March 28, 2004

I left the theater vowing to get the soundtrack, because it's one of the best I've ever heard. And this is the first movie soundtrack I've ever wanted! The music was integral to my enjoyment of the film, and truly helped carry along the spirit of the movie from beginning to end. Anyone who loves old-time gospel music will enjoy this spirited sountrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars constantly on my player right now, October 25, 2004

You know, I didn't really "get" the Coen brother's version of what I consider a classic black comedy film. But I'm glad they did it if for no other reason than it produced this exceptional soundtrack. I can listen to it while sitting at my computer at work and pretty soon I'm swept away to my childhood and the little white church where I was baptised. My toes are tapping and my day is better. The rap songs on it are every bit as heartfelt as the roof rattling gospels. I recommend it to any fan of soul, blues, gospel or Americana. In fact I really dig the mix of old and new on this disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Right On, April 2, 2004

It's obvious from the spiteful review by t4t from NYC that he/she didn't see or watch the movie. The contention that the music on the CD wasn't in the movie is simply wrong. There WERE three songs on the CD that weren't in the movie, but the rest of the tunes were there. Granted, the soundtrack may not have incorporated the entire song, but that's the case on virtually all soundtrack albums. T-Bone Burnett's selection of great gospel songs that illuminate the action on the screen is as flawless as his choices for "O Brother, Where Art Thou?".

This is an excellent soundtrack album and those who enjoyed the music in the movie will enjoy the expanded versions included here.

one of the best unknown movies ever. What pushes it completely over the top is the fantastic soundtrack.

This movie wasn't that great but the soundtrack was excellent. The instrumental at the end of the film as it faded out was very "quite, yet not quite". It gave me a kind of feeling that really invoked some meaningful thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let your light shine on me, May 2, 2005

I first rented this DVD from Netflix and they sent me the wrong one, the older version, by accident. And a happy accident it was since I had never seen that wonderful movie and that lovely performance by Alec Guinness. Eventually I got around to seeing the Coen brothers' version and while it is almost as good, it is the soundtrack that makes it great. I've always liked gospel music but I haven't bought any before because the overly "produced" sound that is popular today is not to my taste. However, this collection is far more varied and interesting. My favorite tracks are the older ones, but I love hearing them ALL. And how nice that most of them are variations of just two traditional songs; Trouble of this world and Let your light shine on me. We get to know and love those songs very well. Great for singing along!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Integration of Score to Image, April 4, 2004
By
This review is from: The Ladykillers (Audio CD)
The soundtrack to THE LADYKILLERS is a somewhat unique approach to scoring this dark seriously comedic quirky film. The numerous vocal parts of the score are incorporated into the film and serve as an integral part of the storytelling. The duality of the music as background and functionality of the film's story is one of the highlights of the movie. After hearing the soundtrack I am know seeing the film in a whole new light. The music actually seemed like a detriment to the film. Until the story moved into its third act did it become apparent what the score was intent on accomplishing. If you see the film you should enjoy this soundtrack.

If you enjoyed this movie then you may enjoy this soundtrack. The tracks go from gospel to rap, all with a southern touch.
