Weak Effort,
By Holly Golightly (Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Lady's Desire (Harlequin Historical, No 409) (Mass Market Paperback)
There were some good points to this book. Yves is a kind, thoughtful hero. I liked the relationship between Yves and Gabrielle. What I didn't like was Gabrielle...Yves claims to be attracted to her intellect. She does so many stupid things, it's hard to think of her as intelligent. And this author is l-a-z-y; she keeps using the same phrases over and over. Both lead characters' hearts "skipped a beat" so many times I was concerned they would go into cardiac arrest.

A let-down of a sequel,
By Gemma "bookworm" (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Lady's Desire (Harlequin Historical, No 409) (Mass Market Paperback)
From the back cover:
She'd only herself to offer, but Gabrielle de Perricault hoped 'twas enough to entice the courageous Yves de Sant-Roux to champion her cause. Though should he pledge his sword to her, a greater danger awaited, for this knight could easily breach the wall that surrounded her heart! Sworn to escape the taint of his birth by the valor of his deeds, Yves de Sant-Roux forsook any binding ties. The Gabrielle de Perricault, a lady of rare sense and subtle beauty, promised something he'd never wanted, yet found he couldn't resist--a home, a family...and her! And my review: I loved Claire Delacroix's Enchanted, so I snapped up this book when I learned that it was the sequel. But I had a hard time believing that this was written by the same author. As another reviewer has stated, the writing was lazy, with tons of repetition. Not only that, but it didn't flow well at all. It was choppy and very difficult to follow. I had to keep going back and rereading sections to try and understand them. I shouldn't have to do that. (I've read Jane Austen for pleasure since the 10th grade, so it's not a "dumb reader" problem.) The characters were only very briefly sketched, and I never really felt like I knew them. I was never emotionally invested in the story. And the heroine is supposedly intelligent, but I never saw it. I don't recommend this book. If you want to try this author, pick up ENCHANTED instead.

"This is another shining example of the expertise of Ms. Delacroix's writing of medieval romance. I became so involved with the intricate plot and the strong characters, I could not put it down. What a hero and heroine! If you haven't read any of this author's work, this is a good one to start with!"
