Editorial Reviews

For the first time on one superb Double CD, Raven presents three classic 1970s albums by one of the finest American singers of the pop era RITA COOLIDGE. The Lady's Not For Sale (1972), Fall Into Spring (1974) and It's Only Love (1975) established her career and feature the pure sounds of laid-back country-rock and West Coast soft-rock mixed with a soulfulness that marks them as polished, quality productions. Raven has previously combined her two platinum-selling hit albums Anytime Anywhere (1977) and Love Me Again (1978) on a great value 2-for-1 release (RVCD-277) containing her biggest hits 'Higher and Higher' and 'We're All Alone'. Originally recorded for A&M Records, these three albums showcase the renowned Coolidge stamp of soulful warmth which is predominant on splendid covers of 'Fever', 'Bird on the Wire', 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight', 'Love Has No Pride', 'Desperados Waiting for the Train' and 'It's Only Love'. Produced by David Anderle and featuring crack session musicians (Booker T. Jones, Sammy Creason, Lee Sklar, Dean Parks, Jerry McGee, Al Perkins and her band the Dixie Flyers) plus stunning backing vocalists (Jennifer Warnes, Clydie King, Sherlie Matthews, Venetta Fields) these beautifully produced albums combine sophistication, flow and a sensual tone to make a completely satisfying whole. With superb quality audio, detailed liner notes and color booklet, this excellent release is a must for fans of sophisticated and soulful country-tinged pop.

The two Rita Coolidge albums I have always wanted to have on CD are finally here. FALL INTO SPRING and IT'S ONLY LOVE are both from the mid-70's and are beautifully done. I have waited for them to come out on CD for years. (THE LADY'S NOT FOR SALE is excellent too; it was released as a single CD some years ago.) The song selection on all three albums is first-rate and her delivery is, as always, perfection. Rita Coolidge can get to the essence of a lyric and her gorgeous vocals are a perfect match for these songs.

My favorites include "Bird on the Wire", "A Woman Left Lonely," "Love Has No Pride," "Hold an Old Friend's Hand," "Desperadoes Waiting for the Train," "We Had it All," "It's Only Love," and "Born to Love Me."

The package also includes extensive liner notes and photos. A great set at a great price.

RITA COOLIDGE can sing it all pop, rock, soul, country, and all are represented on this 2 disc release. when
"anytime, anywhere" "love me again" were released i was hoping it just keeps going.and then "rita coolidge"
and "nice feelin" were released i really got excited. and i never thought her 3 best serious, classic,
releases were all gonna be next as this wonderful 2 disc set. rita coolidge with her smoky vocals with class,
style, and soul, are finally here. these 3 releases were released one after the other on her record label
A&M--these releases were before she hit it big with "anytime anywhere" which is a excellent release in itself
but these 3 are the ones where rita coolidge approached and made her own brand of signature sound on just
magnificent songs and great songwriter's. these 3 releases are all strong in song choices, production, and rita
makes them all her own. i mean "the lady's not for sale" which opens with "my crew" and gets better and better
with "bird on the wire" "i'll be your baby tonight" "everybody loves a winner" all of these and the other's
are performed with expert taste and sound quality. on to "fall into spring" now this one just moves into
another set of incredible songs "love has no pride", "hold an old friend's hand" and flows deeply into a great
gospel sound. my fsvorite "it's only love" soulful, bluesy, sexy, and sophiscated, with excellent song choices
"born to love me" one of the best songs rita has ever recorded. "it's only love" "don't let love pass you by"
and "late again" (this song is sung with such coolness and ease)i have all her releases as mentioned above
and own "satisfied" as a import CD.

Rita Coolidge speaks to the depth of the listener's soul from hers. Especially poignant tracks are "Bird on a Wire" and "Inside of Me." Both will be part of the program at my memorial service, should I ever succumb....

Her throaty, southern accent creates a memorable image of a lady hurting, experiencing love and life in the most heartfelt sense. Personal reflection and musical talent guarantee the listener of an incredible journey into a mature woman's romantic experience.

Finally, my favorite Rita Coolidge album is available in CD format!!! The track "Born to Love Me" is a gentle, but sure expression of appreciation of the love in her life at that time. "I Wanted It All" builds with wonderfully layered vocals towards the end. "Late Again" is a wonderfully sultry, moody, southern rock expression of unsuccessful attempts at getting over a love that's gone. Rita's smooth, mellow vocals pack more emotion than many lesser vocalist can express screaming and shouting their lungs out. The sound quality is clear and rich. If you like any of Rita's other music, please take this opportunity to experience the "It's Only Love" portion of this CD.

I am so thrilled that these three Rita Coolidge albums which were great favorites of mine in the 1970's are available on CD in a 2-CD set. I asked for it as a Winter Solstice gift (we are Atheists) and it came so quickly, it was here in time for the holiday and I have been savoring the sultry sweet sounds of some of my favorite Rita Coolidge songs.

I discovered Rita's music in 1969 when I was only 10 and still follow her today in the work she is doing with her sister Priscilla and Priscilla's daughter. My very favorite song on these CDs is BORN TO LOVE ME from It's Only Love which is a sweet tune about a woman who is in love with a man who "not many would say he's handsome, they don't realize, the best is often hidden from another's eyes". This song is so intimate and joyful about what real love is about, I have to hear it every day. Mama Lou is another song I like about a woman who "sings the blues like a prophet who's lived every word." The Kris Kristofferson song The Burden of Freedom is something that probably needs a gritty male vocal. Rita doesn't sound like a guy getting out of prison!

I have heard people say that Rita is "country rock" which puzzles me. Yes, she did sing some country songs with then husband Kris Kristofferson on his albums and on some of the joint Kris 'n Rita albums they recorded together but Rita, though she is from Nashville, is no country singer. She is jazzy, classy, soulful, and sings more of a bluesy soft rock/pop. Hold An Old Friend's Hand from Fall Into Spring is a unique breakup song that is not country but a blues/rock combo about a woman who had loved a man who has rejected her and now she wants to let him know that she doesn't intend to try to win back his love but just wants him to "come on around and hold an old friend's hand.
