5.0 out of 5 stars DULCE PONTES FROM EUROVISION 91 TO NEW AGE SUPERSTAR
I FIRST HEARD DULCE BACK IN 1991 WHEN SHE REPRESENTED PORTUGAL IN THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST(CINECITTA-ITALY) WITH THE SONG CALLED "LUSITANA PAIXAO". I KNEW THEN THAT I WAS BEFORE A STAR. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE AND HER SONG WAS ALSO EXELENT,PITY IT ONLY FINISHED 7TH. HOWEVER, THE CONTEST REALLY STARTED HER GOING AND THE RESULT WAS THIS HER SECOND ALBUM...

1.0 out of 5 stars Dulce Pontes loses her way
Although billed as fado, this album with its syrupy vocals and synthesizer heavy instrumentation has strayed far from the roots of the genre. I found it so tacky that I immediately resold it to a used record store.

5.0 out of 5 stars DULCE PONTES FROM EUROVISION 91 TO NEW AGE SUPERSTAR, August 24, 1999

This review is from: Lagrimas (Audio CD)
I FIRST HEARD DULCE BACK IN 1991 WHEN SHE REPRESENTED PORTUGAL IN THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST(CINECITTA-ITALY) WITH THE SONG CALLED "LUSITANA PAIXAO". I KNEW THEN THAT I WAS BEFORE A STAR. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE AND HER SONG WAS ALSO EXELENT,PITY IT ONLY FINISHED 7TH. HOWEVER, THE CONTEST REALLY STARTED HER GOING AND THE RESULT WAS THIS HER SECOND ALBUM ENTITLED "LAGRIMAS" WHICH IN MY OPINION HAS ESTABLISHED DULCE PONTES AS THE NO.1 SINGER OF FADO AND NEWAGE MUSIC. THE SONG "CANCAO DO MAR" WAS EVEN USED BY HOLLYWOOD IN A RICHARD GERE MOVIE. THIS ALBUM IS FULL OF BEAUTIFUL PORTUGUESE SONGS AND I AM SURE IS A MUST TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN WORLD MUSIC. I SINCERELY WISH TO CONGRATULATE DULCE PONTES FOR HER VOICE AND MUSIC.

NB: FOR THOSE SONG CONTEST LOVERS, DULCE ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE OTI FESTIVAL (SONG CONTEST OF LATIN COUNTRIES) WITH HER SONG "A SUR DA AMERICA" BOTH THIS SONG AND LUSITANA PAIXAO ARE FOUND IN HER VERY FIRST ALBUM WHICH IS ALSO VERY PLEASANT.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, October 10, 1999
By A Customer

A phenomenal taste of the European music scene. I was first introduced to Dulce Pontes' musical stylings on a duet with Andrea Bocelli on his Sogno disc (track 4)- had to hear more. I found Lagrimas to be absolutely mesmerizing. Up to this point, I had not been exposed to the elegance and depth of texture of the Portugese language, I'm hooked.

Well, its been 6years,ever since I watched Primal Fear ,that Ive been trying to figure out the name of that very famous track ,was really taken aback to see that I wasn't the only one scouting for it.What can I say,the album is out of this world and for all those helpless people who have been trying to figure out the name of that song from primal fear ,it is called Cancao Do Mar.The name of the album is Lagrimas by Dulce Pontes. This song truly is haunting in every sense of the word. What a performance ,just inexplicably fantastic. Her voice is like nothing Ive heard before ,this has led me to listen to more of Fado ever since.Excellent!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dulce Pontes' best!, April 3, 2002
This review is from: Lagrimas (Por) (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after listening to it from a friend at work who in turn bought it in Portugal. It was Love at first sight. Dulce is a passionate singer that mesmerizes with its voice and the way all songs are arranged. This is a CD of traditional portuguese music interpreted in a modern, refreshing way. Dulce has improved on inmortal music. Simply fantastic. After listening to this CD I've become interested in music from Portugal; Fado's and the others. If you like passionate, intense music that you can share with a loved one this is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars True music is beyond language - from an Indian songwriter, September 29, 1998

A couple of my friends played me the CD in a studiofor the first time and the experience of listening to "Cancao da Mar" is still so indescribable ,that please listen to it and find out for yourself.I didn't know what she was singing;I didn't care about what she was singing,it was all there in that voice that cuts thru your soul,as pure and electrifying as lightning. As a singer Dulce has managed to preserve the essence of what her native land has taught her and put it in a new capsule. Those who haven't listened to any music lately that has stirred your soul, listen to "Cancao da mar" whatever country you may be from. She has changed my ears as a songwriter for ever.

There are few or no words in the english language to describe the "fado" genre or "Saudade" as an emotion but after listening to Lagrimas by Dulce Pontes no translations are needed , it is just simply felt.Brilliant album .

5.0 out of 5 stars Without any doubt, one of the chosen few, September 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lagrimas (Audio CD)
Dulce Pontes will blow your mind as you listen to her angelic voice, or may i say devilish? She is one of the few singers who can break your heart with one song, as Marta Sebastyen or Edith Piaf, La Niña de los Peines, Billie Holiday and few others can do.

When Ponte is at her best, few can touch her, yes, i hate to say this, but not even the queen of fado, Amalia Rodrigues herself can surpass her voice quality.

This is an uneven album for its hodge-podge nature, but Lagrima, Cancao do Mar and Estranha forma da vida are timeless and soulfull interpretations of the highest order.

A great singer, and regardless of nationality, among the best ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best CD I've ever heard, October 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Lagrimas (Audio CD)
If you like passionate music this is it. Dulce has just introduced me to Fado, the typical portuguese music. Suprisingly this is a CD of "old" portuguese music, but old it is not. The interpretations are classical and modern at the same time they keep the best that this genre has to offer. In fact I've been buying fado cd's after listening to this one.

Dulce has the voice of an angel and the arrangements are first class. All the songs are good, period, but "Lagrima" in particular is beautiful. This is one of the very best CD I have in my collection.

If you want passionate music to share with someone over a glass of wine this is it. Higly recommendable!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, June 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: LAGRIMAS (Audio CD)
I had never heard of this woman before I saw the movie "Primal Fear". In one scene, Richard Gere goes into a bar in an Hispanic neighborhood to meet with a client, and above the din, you can hear this unbelievably beautiful voice. He ( the client) even makes a point of giving Gere a CD, and shows him the song that he likes on it. I waited till the end of the movie, and saw that it was on the soundtrack, and found out who she was. I got the CD "Lagrimas", and loved it so much I flew from Chicago to Newark, NJ to see her!! There is a big Portugese community out there, and they have just recently opened a Performing Arts Center. ( the City of Newark). So they had a lot of Portugese artists playing there. It may have been a little silly in some people's eyes to do what I did, but the hearing her sing "Lagrimas"; (it means 'tears' in Portugese)was worth the whole trip. She sings 'fado', a type of music that is meancholy, and beautiful, sort of folk songs. I highly recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, August 22, 2004

I suspect I am like many English-speaking people inasmuch as I first heard Cancao do Mar by Dulce Pontes at the end of the Richard Gere - Edward Norton movie, Primal Fear. I think it is very telling that I did just what many others did: I immediately searched for and found the title of this music and who performed it. I doubt that very much music gets the kind of response this music got.

Dulce Pontes has a simply beautiful, and very powerful, voice. You only need to hear her once to understand.

In Cancao do Mar, the composer takes an old chord progression and gives it a new life totally unlike anything before. The new melodic directions are pure, inspired genius. I wish I had written this.
