Product Description

Laguna Fertilizer Pond Spikes supply important nutrition to aquatic plants for a period of one year. The temperature-activated feeding sticks release nutrients only when plants need them most - at or above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Once activated, the spikes slowly release a well-balanced feeding formula that maximizes the size and color all aquatic plants. With low amounts of phosphorous and zero copper, the pond spikes have no adverse effect on water quality and are non-toxic to fish and plant life. Laguna Fertilizer Pond Spikes are specifically designed for potted plants and are compatible with all planting baskets.

I have used similar fertilizer systems to this one, and they are very convenient.

What I like most about the fertilizer sticks is that they can be moved around your tank, in the event that certain plants are not growing as well as others.

I also use plant fertilizer tablets which work well, however, if you stir up the substrate in your tank, a partially dissolved tablet will circulate all over your aquarium leading to an algae bloom.

I also like the fact that with plant fertilizer sticks, you only need to replace them once a year, as opposed to the fertilizer tablets which must be replaced every few
months.

The price for a 6 pack of these fertilizer sticks is also quite reasonable - less than $2 per stick - given that each lasts a year.

Highly recommended.

The Laguna Once a year spikes work fine. The water lilies are healthy and flower nicely. I would buy again.

These were much easier than the tablets I've used in the past, and if they really last for the whole season, that would be great. It was the first time I've used these spikes, so it's kind of hard to rate them yet. We'll see how well the water lilies bloom this summer --we're in Maine, so it's still too early to tell.

One comment about the packaging, though-- the individual spikes were wrapped tightly in plastic wrap, which I assume needs to be removed, but the package directions made no mention of it. These wrappers were very hard to peel off. Seems like if you didn't remove this plastic wrapping, the fertilizer wouldn't be able to move out of the spikes and they'd be useless.

I added a couple of spikes to a healthy 60 gallon fresh water tank. Plants flourished immediately and looked awesome. Fish started dying in two days - a couple a day and the whole population was in distress (color, swimming funny, not eating). I took out the spikes, did a couple of 50% water changes and all was well. Except for the dead fish.
So, do I have a chemical analysis to show the spikes did it? No. But I have enough empirical evidence to know I wont use these again.

I used in my small 26 gallon container for waterlily. It is convenient one spike per year but my waterlily flowers and leaves are smaller than the one I just drop into the 1500 gallon koi pond without any fertilizer. I guess the fish wastes have more nutrition than these small spikes.

This product seems to help my pond plants! I do not know how well it does at slowly releasing the nutrients annually. But, I like the concept. Really the only negative I can think of is that after the roots grow around this stick, I don't think I will ever find it again to remove it from the pot. So, over the years these could collect within the pots since they are plastic.
