5.0 out of 5 stars I never knew there were so many ways to make and save money!, May 7, 2010
I wasn't eligible for unemployment when I lost my job last year because I was overseas working during the so-called control weeks, which meant I was quickly without income and had to figure out fast legal ways to cut costs and generate income. Laid Off Now What has a bunch of ideas that actually work and after using a few of them, I'm at least able to keep the roof above my head and I haven't had to go on public assistance. I'm actually building a couple of the ideas into little businesses and it now looks like I won't need a job again, which is a relief.

I especially liked the shopping ideas. I was able to cut my grocery bill in half by simply changing where I shopped and how I shop. I also shaved $500 a year off my car insurance, without changing agents. That tip alone made this book one of the best investments I've ever made. The scam section was fascinating and I'm still amazed at how many times per week people try to scam me out of what money I've got left. It really helped knowing what to look for. Great USEFUL book! I bought it first as an ebook Laid Off Now What: Surviving Unemployment Financially (Laid Off Now What: The Recession Edition)and then as a paperback.

More About the Author

My interests are varied and I'm always seeking new topics to write and learn about, which means you'll find my work and writing all over the place under a number of different names. Adventure, new experiences, telling stories via words or pictures, helping people, teaching and celebrating life.

In school I excelled in writing but never considered it as a career. In 1988 and 1989, almost exactly a year apart I had two serious car accidents which changed my course of study and career. At the time I was a model. Windshield changed that direction and from February of 1989 through mid 1994 I suffered migraine headaches 24/7 and couldn't sit at a computer for more than 20 minutes before they'd set in. This causes me to change my course of study from illustration to marketing, business management and sales, something I could do without having to sit at a desk all day. Around 1994 started to feel better and began writing articles on real estate and learning about journalism. At the time I worked in sales for the Washington Post out of Seattle. Surprise, two of my long-form advertorial features actually won national awards for advertising and my clients were experiencing record sales. I wasn't looking to start writing, but writing found me.

I soon left the Washington Post after being there for five years and did a year with CBS radio group where I found myself writing radio scripts for clients. That job I left on April 17th 1996. That day is also the day I sat down and started the first short story in The Sensuality Series as a way to flirt with my then boyfriend who lived in North Carolina. Each story I wrote got me a plane ticket and within three months I had my first book. I realized after the reviews that I have a gift for pulling emotions out through words. Writing erotica was how I discovered this but it wasn't until the mid-2000s when I joined forces with a journalist in the Middle East, that this talent really matured. Our articles on the humanitarian conditions in the Middle East, combining his on the ground interviews with my ability to create a theater in people's minds and place them in the middle of the story gained us substantial praise from human rights groups and got us a lot of enemies from the people we exposed. It also lead to a number of awards for our work and policy changes on an international level.

About the same time, because of 911 and my increased work reporting on the Middle East, I rediscovered my own faith, Christianity and I became increasingly alarmed at its being used as a weapon of hate, segregation, war and reason to oppress others. This is not the Christianity I grew up with nor the Christianity supported by the New Testament. This lead me into my philanthropic activities, working with people of all faiths seeking peace, an end of apartheid throughout the world and equal rights for all people, no matter who they are, what they believe or where they come from.

As my writing gained readership I found myself invited to other countries to work and learn about other cultures. I also found that supporting human rights is admirable to everyone but those abusing them so I collected some enemies along the way as well. Life is interesting.

To date I've written 1) Sensuality Volume One (2002), Laid Off Now What? Surviving Unemployment Financially, Psychologically and Nailing that New Job Fast (2003), Three Weeks to Freedom with Wafa Abu Shamus 2003, Laid Off Now What?!? Thriving Financially Through Unemployment, The Great Recession Edition (2009); Storybook Advent Calendar (2009) with Michael Brech; Storybook Advent Carols Collection Songbook (2010) plus the two Storybook Advent Carols Collection CDs I co-produced with Michael Brech of Christmas Music. In production are three more books in the Laid Off Now What Series, a second Storybook Advent and Sensuality Volume Two, which was completed in 1997 but still needs to be edited. 2011 and 2012 have international books focusing on food, culture and humanitarian issues. I've also assisted on an upcoming non-fiction book about economics, oil and world affairs due out in 2012 called Ultimate Betrayal and have an work-in-progress manuscript about doing business in Saudi Arabia for Westerners.

In addition I've written over 1000 articles on various subjects ranging from relationships and sexuality to the Gaza Strip, Middle East and technology.

Like I said, I have lots of interests and I just love telling stories and educating people.

What I can tell you is this. Whether I'm writing non-fiction about politics, employment, cultures and humanitarian issues, children's stories capturing human values with pictures under a pseudonym or sexy little stories I won't let my parents read, my work will always be surprising, human, educational and different. That I promise. Thanks for taking the time to stop by.
