Book Description

July 7, 2008
It is called the Olympic Village, and rightly so. In 1932, Lake Placid hosted the third Winter Olympics, and in 1980 it hosted the thirteenth Winter Olympics. Lake Placid has placed an athlete on all but one winter Olympic roster since 1924. This small community continually works to keep international winter sports on the calendar. First settled as a farming community in 1800, it was home to the famous Lake Placid Club from 1895 to 1980. Today it is known for its beautiful setting amid the Adirondack peaks of New York and for its diverse summer activities making it a year-round international resort.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Jog Down Memory Lane., August 9, 2008

This review is from: Lake Placid (Then and Now: New York) (Paperback)
During my college years, I worked summers at the Lake Placid Club (1958-1961) and so I looked forward to reading descriptions of the village of Lake Placid, then and now. I was not disappointed. The book features photographs of commercial buildings, homes, etc. in Lake Placid "in the old days" and what each of them has now become. The text is succinct and to the point. Photos are great, research seems top-notch. I wish there had been a bit more detail about the Club, but I have David Ackerman's book for that. A fold-out map, or a map on the inside cover, of the village with landmarks as they stand now would have helped for one whose memory of this charming place has faded over the past 50 years. Overall, a delightful and easy read.

This is a nice book for pictures. If you're looking for in-depth history or any other kind of information, this is not the book for you. The photos are still very beautiful.
