If you have not read this book, DO NOT READ THE REVIEW BY FUNG (from December 2004). It contains massive plot spoilers, which will ruin your enjoyment of the book. I have asked Amazon to remove the review, but if they don't, please heed this warning -- for your own sake!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Questionable
To me this book was a huge let down, from start to finish. There was a adventure for Darren and Harkat, which could have been so much more except the author detailed to much on the gruesome killings of subjects in the book a little to far considering the books are ideal for high school age kids which are easily influenced. I would not recommend this book to anyone..to me...

5.0 out of 5 stars CIRQUE DU FREAK ROCKS MY SOCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, October 30, 2005
A Kid's Review
YEAH!!!!!!! I've been reading the cirque du freak books for 2 years now. I've read each one three times to make shure I didn't miss anything. I aplaud Darren shann In the book and the writer. Book ten continues the saga obviously and it is mainly about Harkat. He is trying to fing his former soul. I just want to say that his former self is one of Darrens allies but traitors from early on in the series. He was darrens friend but also a traitor to Darren. (...)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Accompanyment For Your School Reading, October 26, 2005
The Lake Of Souls, by Darren Shan, is 10 of 12 in the series. Darren Shan, and his friend Harkat Mulds, a Little Person, who was brought back to life by the mysterious but powerful Mr. Desmond Tiny when Harkat's soul was trapped on Earth, must venture into a realm where The Lake of Souls exist, and within it, Harkat must find his about himself because he has no idea who he was/will be. I, for one, think it's a good book to come right near the end, because I think Harkat will be a very important character to defeating the Vampaneze Lord, who is the enemy of the Vampires. This is book offers good surprises, action, and a little shot of horror in it's pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vivid and Original, October 28, 2011
About the Book:

Shan takes a step back from the War of Scars and focuses on a character that we all have com to know and love: Harkat Mulds. Harkat's nightmares have returned, and Mr. Tiny shows up to transport Darren and the Little Person to another world so that the latter can figure out who he was in his past life.

Review:

Well, this book has definitely taken a different path from the rest of the series, and I must admit I very much enjoyed it. It was like a nice vacation, only not so relaxing. Darren and Harkat must come across a series of trials so that they may reach the lake of souls. Shan did a wonderful job at creating action in this book. It was definitely a page turner. His monstrous creatures were extremely vivid as well, such as the giant (and I mean GIANT) toad. I especially liked the Grotesque. It was completely unique and revolting. In this book, we are also introduced to the Kulashkas, which seem to be kinsfolk of the Guardians of Blood that we witnessed in the Vampire Mountain trilogy. I still wish we could have learned more about the Kulashkas/Guardians of Blood and their culture. Why do they milk the Grotesque? Why do they eat the dead? Hell, how did the Grotesque even come into being?

Then, once more, Shan continues to drop surprises and twists. I was especially shocked when I found out where they were and who Harkat was. Now, with the hint Mr. Tiny leaves, you may be able to figure it out on your own though it seems to have surprised a good chunk of people. This was definitely my favourite of the series so far, and I cannot wait to read the final two.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vampire Fantasy, August 13, 2006
First off, i have to say that if you haven't read the previous Cirque Du Freak Books, you should read those in order before reading the other books. The Lake of Souls follows the half-vampire Darren Shan and the mysterious little person Harkat Mulds through a mystical land full of secrets... on a quest to discover Harkat's true identity. This book takes the reader into a fantasy land, full of mysterious creatures, and danger. It is a must read for fans of the Cirque Du Freak series, and it does not disappoint. It's full of twists, and you will be hungry for more by the end of the book. These books never get boring, and leave you anxious to find out what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vampire Master!, January 20, 2006
Cirque Du Freak: the Lake of Souls was a great book that I read all the way through without putting it down. Darren Shan writes an extremely imaginative plot line that kept me guessing what was going to happen next, without ever truly knowing if it would happen or not. This book follows our friends Darren and Harket into a new world of danger and magic, mistical creatures and a crazy old man on a path to find who Harket was in his past life. I thought this book was one of the best of the Cirque Du Freak series and can't wait for the next one to come out. I would recomend this book to all people ages eight to one hundred and twenty seven. Darren Shan keeps his readers on the edge of their seats once again in the thrilling Cirque Du Freak: the Lake of Souls!

4.0 out of 5 stars Darren Shan's Mysical Adventure, January 23, 2006
By
Cirque Du Freak's The Lake of Souls, is about a half vampire boy named Darren Shan. This is he 10th book in the series by the wonderful author Darren Shan who uses the best details possible. In the book, Darren must go into a time portal to help his good friend Harkat discover who he was before he died and got his new body created by the king of the Little People, Mr.Tiny. While he's there, a war is going on in his own time with the Vampanese -an evil race of the vampire- and the legendary vampires. This amazing adventure goes from giant toads, dragons, four eyed rats, spiders, pirates, and mysterious people known as Kulashkas, who serve the sacred monster called the Grotesque.

The Lake of Souls is a wondrous 265 paged book filled with action, disgusting monsters, quick getaways, jungles, swamps, and more. This book ought to get your heart pounding and hypnotize you until the very end. Darren Shan's first person point of view gives you a better idea of what's happening too.

Darren is a brave whole-hearted boy who would do anything to help his friends in their time of need. I strongly recommend this book to you so you can enjoy a wonderful story too. So why not go out and pick up the first book of the series?

4.0 out of 5 stars Something different, January 19, 2006
By
Juan Farias (burlington washington) - See all my reviews
The most recent Cirque Du Freak book by Darron Shan in my opinion is the best so far just because is so different from all the others. This book just takes of in a whole different direction then the previous 9 books. Instead of Darren and Harkat going after the vampaneeze they try to find out who Harkat waws in his past life. For those of you who havent read any of the books Harkat is a re-encarnation of a person that lived long ago and was brought bakc to life ass a paled skinned little person. every night he has nighmares about him dieing and it turns out that the only way the nightmares will stop is if he finds out he used to be. anyways this book is all about Harkat and his quest and thats why i like this book so much. there is so much new stuff that goes on not your ussual story line that a cirque du freak book ussually has. In this book Darren and harkat encounter a lot of different types of creatures besides the ones they already see at the cirque du freak id tell you more about what types of creatures they encounter but i dont want to ruin the book if you havent read it yet. so i would highly reconmend this book to people that are into fictional horror adventures, but in order to really get the whole story you would need to read all the other nine books

5.0 out of 5 stars Darren Shan- Lake of Souls, December 22, 2005
A Kid's Review
I think this book was definitely the best one of the series because it contains the most fictionous characters and has a lot of twists and most of it wasn't predictable, like most books are! The ending was a total shock and I can't wait to read the next one! If you are a fan of Darren Shan you very well SHOULD read this novel!
