Book Description

June 30, 1996
This is the first popular book about Lake Victoria cichlids, and it reports about a species assemblage that is largely new to aquarists and scientists alike. The 173 species discussed constitute a Mbuna-like species assemblage of Lake Victoria cichlids, that was previously believed not to exist! The "new" cichlid assemblage carries a great potential both for biological research and for the aquarium hobby. The purpose of this book is to give a first introduction to this newly discovered fauna, and to make researchers, hobbyists, and conservationists aware of ist riches. Most emphasis is laid upon the presentation of the various species complexes and species, with much new information about distribution, ecology, and behaviour in their natural environment. For this purpose, underwater work using SCUBA was done for the first time in Lake Victoria. High time therefore, to look at Lake Victoria's rock cichlids more carefully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock Dwelling Cichlids Only, June 10, 2010
By
This review is from: Lake Victoria Rock Cichlids (Hardcover)
Overall, this is a very good book and well worth having. It is out of print, so used copies are hard to come by and expensive. There are lots of photos of species, with lengthy descriptions of the fishes' appearance, collection locations, and habitats. Though there is a chapter on keeping and breeding Victorian cichlids in the aquarium, this is a book about cichlids in the wild, not in the aquarium. And that is the true value of this book.

I did not give a 5-star rating for a couple of reasons. First, most photos are much too dark. I cannot say if this is a printer's error or the result of the quality of the original photos themselves. I suspect that expert use of Photoshop would have, and should have, fixed these issues before publication. Second, the index is grossly insufficient. There is no subject index, only a species index-- and much of it is grouped into various complexes, instead of listing actual species. Granted, a lot of this is due to the fact that species names had not yet been assigned to the various fishes at the time of the writing, but it does make it harder to find information on a species you know.

Finally, I wish there was a companion volume that discussed the non-rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria.
