The first thing noticed is the voice: Refreshing in both its strength and uniqueness. Second would be her instrument selection to back up her vocals; it reminds me a bit of Tom Waits in the late 70s - complimenting her words instead of overpower them. Lyrically, some of the songs are beautiful in their simplicity. Others rival Waits in the use of metaphor. And, like Waits, her music has the power to transport me to another time and place. One example; listening to "On Second Thought", I find myself sitting in a smoky little nightclub in Harlem during the late 1930s. Music that transports is a rare find today. I use Tom Waits as a barometer because I hold his music in the highest regard. Like Waits, Amy Correia's music has the power to make you `feel'. Overall, life is meant for better things; "Lakeville" is certainly one of them.

I remember the first time I saw Amy. This awkward gal was standing in the middle of the stage on Conan O'Brien and I was thinking to myself "who in the hell is this girl with her little cello friend". Well the song ended and I didn't know what to think. It had been a long time since I didn't have an instant opinion on an artist.
The more I slept on it the more interested I became, until finally I broke down and ordered a used copy of Carnival Love. I couldn't take the CD out for weeks. Amy's unique songwriting complements a raw instrumentation that screams out against the status quo pop of today. Her lyrics are thought-provoking and insightful. I have met Amy several times at various gigs, and she couldn't be a sweeter person. Buy with confidence that you are getting a CD well worth your money.

One of the best songwriters, singers and performers around,
This review is from: Lakeville (Audio CD)
I had to chime in here - I know all are entitled to their opinion. I just couldn't allow a bad review of Amy's record be left without a counter response.
The trouble with the majority of music listeners these days are that we can be quite fickle. We fall in love with a record, and want it to be repeated again and again. What Amy Correia is is a career artist. Someone who bares her true self - and the result is art that makes our lives a lot fuller. I don't think that's a subjective thing. It is clearly what she does on record and in person. It's a gift to us all. She is an honest songwriter and dedicated musician - not some silly entertainer (which sadly is quite a large percent of those working today) who show us nothing and say even less. This record is a wonderful addition to what will be a long career with many evolutions. Get out and see her live and continue to watch this beauty grow.
