The first thing noticed is the voice: Refreshing in both its strength and uniqueness. The worldweary lyrics blend into beautiful, plaintive, acoustic playing.
I had the chance to see Amy live in Fords, New Jersey, and the short set really worked. This long-player tends to work as a nap-inducer: that's not a bad thing, but you're gonna miss some very pleasing sounds.

The first thing noticed is the voice: Refreshing in both its strength and uniqueness. Second would be her instrument selection to back up her vocals; it reminds me a bit of Tom Waits in the late 70s - complimenting her words instead of overpower them. Lyrically, some of the songs are beautiful in their simplicity. Others rival Waits in the use of metaphor. And, like Waits, her music has the power to transport me to another time and place. One example; listening to "On Second Thought", I find myself sitting in a smoky little nightclub in Harlem during the late 1930s. Music that transports is a rare find today. I use Tom Waits as a barometer because I hold his music in the highest regard. Like Waits, Amy Correia's music has the power to make you `feel'. Overall, life is meant for better things; "Lakeville" is certainly one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amy is the best! Unique talent still undiscovered by many., December 13, 2004

I remember the first time I saw Amy. This awkward gal was standing in the middle of the stage on Conan O'Brien and I was thinking to myself "who in the hell is this girl with her little cello friend". Well the song ended and I didn't know what to think. It had been a long time since I didn't have an instant opinion on an artist.

The more I slept on it the more interested I became, until finally I broke down and ordered a used copy of Carnival Love. I couldn't take the CD out for weeks.

Amy's unique songwriting complements a raw instrumentation that screams out against the status quo pop of today. Her lyrics are thought-provoking and insightful. I have met Amy several times at various gigs, and she couldn't be a sweeter person.

Buy with confidence that you are getting a CD well worth your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best songwriters, singers and performers around, April 23, 2005
This review is from: Lakeville (Audio CD)
I had to chime in here - I know all are entitled to their opinion. I just couldn't allow a bad review of Amy's record be left without a counter response.

The trouble with the majority of music listeners these days are that we can be quite fickle. We fall in love with a record, and want it to be repeated again and again.

What Amy Correia is is a career artist. Someone who bares her true self - and the result is art that makes our lives a lot fuller. I don't think that's a subjective thing. It is clearly what she does on record and in person. It's a gift to us all. She is an honest songwriter and dedicated musician - not some silly entertainer (which sadly is quite a large percent of those working today) who show us nothing and say even less.

This record is a wonderful addition to what will be a long career with many evolutions.

Get out and see her live and continue to watch this beauty grow.

4.0 out of 5 stars norah jones with a personality, September 7, 2005

a bit "torch-song" at times, which i find boring, but then...only a bit. she can invoke an emotion that i'm not sure has a word to describe it. her voice is gritty with personality, yet at the same time sultry. she convinces you that she's lived a life, and is not just crooning about a world she is too far above to know.
couldn't give her 5 stars, because there are albums and artists that i prefer.......but i'd give her 4 & 3/4 for sure!

I had the honor of seeing Amy do an acoustic show last Saturday and she is a unique talent. Her new songs are achingly beautiful. I wish more people had the opportunity to hear her.

5.0 out of 5 stars great CD, June 16, 2005

I, too, can't bear the bad consumer reviews! This is an amazing CD. I also am in love with "Carnival Love," her first CD and adore the fact that these two CDs are entirely different. On "Lakeville," Amy shows us -- much like Sam Phillips, the goddess of all music -- that not everyone needs perfection in a CD -- the voice can crack, the guitar-playing can be wobbly, but we are hearing the heart, so to speak, of that performer. We are hearing a moment in time. There are some songs on this CD that bring me to tears -- just simply 'cause they're beautiful and capture a fleeting feeling or moment. There isn't a bad song on here. Amy is a smashing new talent (I have also seen her live, and it's one of the best shows you'll ever see) -- thank goodness she created "Lakeville" and is sharing it with the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. Art., August 22, 2008

I 2nd the opinion of Rebecca. Amy Correia is a career artist. Beautiful, moving work, and if you haven't seen her do her thing live, then you need to plan a trip to her next gig. This recording is full of beauty, and my personal favorite, Hold On, is moving in a way unique to music.

We have a West to East Coast thing happenning, with the atmosphere of a Montana backporch. "59th Street", "Coney Island...", "Dollar Lake", and the CD namesake are warm black and white recollections (the cover art says it all) of quiet times and quiet people. Maybe a little *too* quiet for Amy's understated insistence.
I enjoyed her dignified folk-blues (blues without the chord progressions) live. This CD is enjoyable, though (for me) not in one take. Fans of Melanie Safka will have a field day listening to an often uncannily similiar sound and poetic approach. That's the *East* Coast calling.
