MYSTERY - INTRIQUE - NATIVE AMERICAN, December 16, 2006
This review is from: Lakota Baby (Harlequin Intrigue) (Mass Market Paperback)
Maggie Brandt has spent one night with Joe Lonewolf before he was shipped off to Iraq. What troubles that started.
Joe came back to his job as chief of the tribal police to find that Maggie had married Paul, his stepbrother. Joe figured she had left his arms almost immediately after he left. The thought made him a bit angry.
Joe had sworn to his father that he would keep to his Lakota upbringing and raise his children the same. He would not marry a white woman.
Maggie was devastated when Joe rejected her upon leaving the rez for Iraq, so shortly after married Paul. Then Paul was killed. Was it an accident?
Maggie was left with her five month old baby, Dakota to raise so she continued to work with the teenagers as a preferrable job.
Then one night she is having a horrifying dream and Dakota disappears. She calls Joe and just about falls apart. They have three days to return what was stolen or lose Dakota.
An all out search is conducted by the tribal police and the FBI. Joe is assisted by Delaney Toke, his right hand man and the FBI agent, Chase Metcalf.
First, Kiya Driskall was found dead, then Paul dies, then Bernie Two Eagles, with Tom Little Elk being shot. His wife, Winona takes care of Dakota.
Then there is Gray Running Fox, Joe's old friend and manager of the Grand Buffalo Casino and Marcus Caldwell, of the National Indian Gaming Commission and the Lakota woman, Leotie Jones, who is obsessed with Joe Lonewolf and always trying to put the make on him. Joe had made the mistake of having a short affair with her when they were teenagers.
The plot keeps up an excellent pace with great characters [I had forgotten about the Sukas gang of teens].
Definitely Recommend - m - readers of mystery should enjoy this one.
