Joseph Shields, Jr. has given a gift of spirit. This compilation of Lakota pipe songs is very sacred, honest, and pure.

At long last a cd of Lakota Canunpa songs, one we can understand and learn from. Of course like most recordings of this type, it's not quite melodious, but it serves the purpose. It would have been better had the words been included in both Lakota & English....for those who don't know what they are singing about, but for some reason it seems as though the words are not provided as some sort of deterrent to those people who would just go along and sing these Sacred songs just for the hell of it. As if! Most common people would even bother..... But it has helped me....

Good singers, but not good Lakota speakers,

The songs on this CD are sung by some really good singers. Unfortunately they don't seem to be very good Lakota speakers. A lot of the words in the lyrics are mispronounced and the lyrics are quite muddled at places. For learning the songs it would also help if the lyrics were written using the standard Lakota spelling as it is used in the New Lakota Dictionary. Other than that these are really good singers, they just need to learn Lakota better.
