Book Description

July 10, 2007
The Lakota Way 2008 wall calendar features text from Joseph M. Marshall III, and original medicine shield artwork from the author as well as Joseph Chamberlain and Gerald Cournoyer. Each spread will also include the Lakota names for the months, such as "When the Geese Return" and "When Berries are Good." Marshall's text presents a traditional Lakota virtue for each month, guiding the reader along the Lakota path of wisdom. Joseph M. Marshall III, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, is a teacher, historian, Lakota craftsman and writer. He has authored several books, including the highly acclaimed "Walking with Grandfather," "The Lakota Way" and "The Journey of Crazy Horse." Joseph Chamberlain is a Dakota artist living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His art has graced many books and CD covers. Gerald Cournoyer, a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe, is a teacher and professional artist who has had solo shows in North America, Europe and Asia. Sample Caption: "Fortitude - We all want to be strong... we want to be swift and graceful and embody all the attributes the world seems to reward the most. But in the real world we are not all strong; we are not all swift; and we can't face every circumstance with every attribute or resource we should. Whatever we have, whatever we are, or no matter how tired or disillusioned we are, there is still an objective to be reached, a dream to be realized..."

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lakota Way 2008 Calendar, May 8, 2009
This review is from: The Lakota Way 2008 Calendar: Native American Wisdom on Ethics and Character (Calendar)
I enjoy Joeseph Marshall's book a great deal, both fiction and non-fiction. I ordered this calendar and love it. It shows the Sioux calendar and provides thoughts through the year. This calendar has three artist's work for the monthly picture. Marshall is one of the artists. The art is wonderful. I enjoyed this so much; I now have the 2009 calendar. I love it also.

While as a calendar, it serves it's purpose well. However, there are many items and notes placed on specific days, that relate to native history and culture. From that perspective, it's is a history lesson of sorts as well. each month also has narrative from Lakota Elders that are meditations and life lessons to guide and illuminate your path on the Red Road.
