Editorial Reviews

Review

MacLachlan presents a vision of African life that's serene and safe, and the mother's voice lulls, reassures, and soothes-it's rich bedtime listening for the very young.
—Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Patricia MacLachlan is the Newbery Medal-winning author of the much-loved SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL. Lala Salama evolved from a time spent with her son John and his family in Tanzania, where John worked with Jane Goodall, and he and his wife worked on other conservation projects as well. Their daughter Ella was born in Tanzania. Patricia MacLachlan lives in Massachusetts.

Elizabeth Zunon is the illustrator of MY HANDS SING THE BLUES. About Lala Salama, she says, "For me, the key to falling in love with a story is feeling a connection with the people and places native to the setting." Format: Hardcover
The life of a child in Tanzania is unimaginable for the little children of the USA - except that MacLachlan's words and Zunon's illustrations paint a vivid picture for them. Whether during story time or in a multicultural unit, children should enjoy learning about a faraway land - and maybe creating a soft rhythm of their own to accompany it. PRE-K, EL(K-3) - ADVISABLE. Cindy, Library Teacher

We got this book from the library & immediately bought it when we had to return it. Gorgeous pictures & a great look at a culture totally different from ours. My daughter always comments how strong the woman is to farm & cook all the while carrying the baby. Its a good bedtime story as the cadence of the words are lyrical & soothing. Love the sweet little family dynamic. Really great book.

Beautiful illustrations, coupled with relaxing text. What more do you need in a lullaby? My grandchildren love this book and ask for it over and over again.

The photography is lovely, though I wish that there was more of a story and I also wish there were more words in Swahili.
