Superb Album Full of Pop Gems, March 31, 2006
This review is from: Lalaine - Inside Story (Audio CD)
It's actually a shame that Lalaine signed with major label Reprise Records, I like her indie, organic sound heard on this album much more than her newer stuff. Every song deserves to be here, the vocals are great, and every track is catchy and hard to get out of your head. I suggest looking on eBay for a copy of this CD, since it's out of print, it's virtually impossible to find it in any store. My song-by-song review:
1. We Had Something - A perfect album opener. This midtempo, upbeat, catchy tune is perfect for that long road trip. The vocals are great, Lalaine has that Janis Joplin-esque rasp that's hard to resist. 10/10
2. All Fall Down - Not quite slow enough to be a true ballad, but at the same time, not upbeat at all. The guitar in the chorus sounds great, and the rhythmic clapping also adds a nice effect. 9/10
3. Save Myself - This stunning ballad demonstrates Lalaine's great voice. It's nice to have a pop track with just a piano accompanying the vocalist. Simply beautiful. 10/10
4. You Wish - The theme to Lalaine's movie "You Wish" is the only song here that sounds like it could be performed by Hilary Duff. The vocals are mediocre, and the lyrics are very bubblegum pop, but nevertheless, it's got a catchy sound. 7/10
5. Can't Stop - A fun, upbeat rock song. You'll be singing this one all day long. 9/10
6. You Know How to Hurt a Girl - Sounds just like something Michelle Branch might sing. A mid-tempo ballad with great lyrics, good vocals, and a very nice tune. 9/10
7. True to Me - Lalaine's vocals are little too nasaly for me, like she recorded it when she had a head cold. Could be great if a more powerful backing track was provided, and if it was re-recorded. 5/10
8. Shake What You Got - Same type of song as "Can't Stop." An undeniably infectious chorus makes this one a definite winner. 10/10
9. Running In Circles - A relaxing, calm ballad. Not as beautiful as "Save Myself," but still nice. 8/10
10. If You Wanna Rock - This track can also be heard on the "Pixel Pefect" soundtrack. Fun, catchy, dancey, great. I love it! 10/10
11. A great way to close the album. This chilled out song is perfect for listening to after a long, hard day. The lyrics are inspirational and the tune is slow and delicate. 8/10
Overall, Lalaine's album is surprisingly good, especially for a low-budget, indie record. If you can find it, pick this one up. You won't be sorry!
