Great Big Band Music - Too Much John Faddis Screeching,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lalo Schifrin: Latin Jazz Suite (DVD)
This is a very good "Live Performance" by Faddis, Sanchez, Berroa, Acuna, Doctor and the WDR Band. From the exciting opening tune 'Montuno' to the equally uplifting closer 'Manaos'. But I think many people will tire of John Faddis' screeching high notes. It does get kind of old and annoying. Even though I love high note specialists in big bands (e.g. Rich, Kenton, Ferguson, etc.) Faddis' continued jaunts into the stratosphere can really make one want to fast forward a dozen measures so as not to suffer from noise fatique. David Sanchez is undoubtedly the more imaginative, inventive and articulate of the two soloists. Just as an aside - I noticed that while Faddis, Sanchez and the rhythm section were really having a good time, most of the band acted like a bunch of stiff-necked white collar executives. Of course that didn't affect their excellent ensemble work. Whatever happened to enjoying yourself while playing jazz (ala Don Ellis' Jazz Orchestra). I used to hate playing in bands where playing jazz seemed like a recital. Too serious, no fun. Also, I can see where some jazz enthusiasts say that the Fender bass doesn't lend itself well to alot of tunes. You be the judge here. All in all, a very outstanding jazz DVD.

This DVD is a must for every jazz fan and certainly to those that favor big bands. John Faddis is the top soloist on this CD. His technique is incredible and even in the high register his tone stays full. Due to his outstanding performance the other soloists do seem a bit less. The orchestra (the WDR big band) is outstanding as well with great ensemble playing. The music of Lalo Schifrin is as one might expect from this master. Prepare yourself for great arrangements that can only be performed by professional bands.
