One of Lamaze's few not-so-great toys,

I've purchased virtually all the Lamaze toys for my baby (except for the Knottie Babies), but have found that this was one of the very few duds from a company that generally makes really great baby toys. The problem is that this toy doesn't really do anything. I know it's intended for newborns -- who don't do much of anything themselves -- but the star basically hangs there. The squeaker is too difficult for an infant to activate, and the toy's mirror is really tiny. If your infant needs something bright to capture his attention, I would suggestperhaps buying the wrist rattles and hanging those from his carseat, etc. Later on, those wrist rattles can be used for actual play as well. Skip this toy in favor of other Lamaze successes!

I must agree with your other customer when she said this toy was a total dud. Like her I have bought toys from Lamaze and have found them to be most stimulating and fun for my little boy. When I read the description on the box it seemed like there was so much to do with the toy but I really don't know what they were thinking when they invented this toy as the squeezer is really too difficult for the baby to activate and even though I tried to point out the mirror or the patterns on the star by singing or shaking it there has not been a time where he showed any sign of interest. I bought the toy to hang on his stroller but it looks like I'll have to buy a more stimulating one!

My baby loves the star,

No, the Lamaze Soft Star doesn't DO a lot, but my baby has enjoyed it since he was born. It is in his crib, and he loves to hold on to the star, look at himself in the mirror, and move it around before he goes to sleep. I think he enjoys the colors, patterns, and feel of the star. He is nearly six months old now, and he still plays with it in his crib. Not every toy needs spectacular bells and whistles to be entertaining to a baby. I would recommend the star to anyone with a tiny one.

My 4 1/2-month-old daughter (preemie) has always been a few steps behind what would be considered "normal." (Though, is there truly a "normal" when it comes to babies?! Maybe when it comes to what the doctors are looking for.) Anyway, we needed to work on finding objects, reaching for them and then grabbing hold. I went toy happy (mostly Lamaze brand) and had boxes delivered daily for about 2 weeks. Some of the items are just too advanced; she'll probably enjoy them in a few months. Others just didn't grab her attention no matter how hard we tried. This Soft Star might not look like much . . . but I hung it on the side of the crib and she took to it right away! The smiley side has her cooing up a storm! The black and white side is favored over the red and blue (and for some reason, she gets upset when we play "Baby in the mirror" with any mirror so that could be another reason she likes the blk & wh side better). This past week or so, she's managed to reach over and play with it, flipping it herself. The face she makes when she flips the smiley over to reveal the checkered blk & wh side is hilarious! Like she's concentrating real hard--the eyebrows go down. I love it! We just recently bought a 3-D floor gym and I hang this over the bar along with the other toys. As soon as she sees it, the smiles start and she kicks away with anticipation! I realize some babies take to certain things where others don't, but this one has even a picky baby happy, so it'd be worth a try!

My baby didn't like it,

I have heard that Lamaze toys are excellent for babies but I felt this one was a waste of money. I think the star is quite heavy for a baby to play with and my daughter always picked up something that was lighter and easier to hold than this star. In the end I used in our car for her to look at while we were out and about. I'm not sure if it really held her attention - she always seemed to be attracted to other toys if given a choice.

I bought this before my child was born. I wanted a toy that would stimulate her and be easily mobile. When she was a newborn, she loved to star in the mirror and the black and white sides of the star. Now that she is 4 months, she likes the yellow squeeking star and still loves the mirror. I put it in her bassinet and would prop it up on its own. I also would take it with me and prop it up on the stroller to entertain her while at church.

We received this as a gift when our daughter was born. I was excited because it was Lamaze and they have a great reputation. Unfortunately, my daughter has never had an interest in this toy. No matter how much we tried to get her to play with it, she ignores it. I would recommend purchasing a Mr Whoozit rather than this. Atleast Mr. Whoozit has many different things going on with it. This is just a waste of money.

We bought this star for our baby nephew, who would stare at it at seven days old (the black and white side)!! He really seemed to like it, and was very quiet and intense while looking at it. Now he likes looking at the mirrored side. I highly recommend this toy!

I was surprised to read the reviews that thought this toy was a dud. I love it and, as far as I can tell, so does my son. He's almost 2 months old and will stare at it for ages. A nice feature is that the stars can be fastened at an angle--it has small but strong velcro circles on each side--so baby can see two sides at once. It's a great toy for travel since we can hang it anywhere or just prop it up. Plus it's machine washable and is as bright and new-looking after washing as when it was bought (although I must admit I've only washed it once.) A couple of the reviews mentioned the squeeker was too hard to squeeze and in general it was too boring and/or heavy for a baby to play with; perhaps this is why the star is recommended for babys up to six months. It's a great toy that promotes interaction with your infant, but maybe they do outgrow it by the time they are actively playing on their own. From my experience thus far, it's a wonderful, fun toy that my boy loves to stare at, and I really enjoy showing him the bright colors and patterns. (I didn't realize it squeeks until I inadvertantly squeezed it--I was delighted! How many toys can delight an adult?) I would highly recommend this star.

I ordered this toy for my 6 month son. I gave him the toy. He was not interested. I tried to show him how to squeeze the squeaker but it was too hard. He dosen't like the toy because it dosen't do anything and the squeaker is too hard for him to push. It's great for him to throw or chew on. But other than that I wouldn't recommend it.
