This review is from: Lamentations Holy Week in Provence (Audio CD)
I have known and enjoyed the relatively famous Requiem by Gilles for some years now, but was pleasantly surprised by this disc of Lamentations.

Most other French Baroque lamentations are composed on a small scale, but these by Gilles are quite large, more in the tradition of grands motets. They employ a full complement of soloists plus chorus, with obbligato instruments. The music is sublime; usually quite understated, but occasionally bursting forth with energy and drama.

Gilles proves himself to be a master of wonderfully poignant melodies. The mood us mainly quite sombre, but is broken up somewhat by the contrasting textures (if not mood) of the works by Carpentras and Bouzignac, the latter of which is a truly unique composer and deservse more renown.

The performances are faultless, especially the solo singers who capture the delicate French ornaments exquisately.

This is a very rewarding performance, and a delight in all respects. Highly recommended
