Excellent laments - uncommon works to know, January 20, 2001
This review is from: Lamenti Barocchi, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
This is the second volume of a series of baroque laments released by Naxos - the the normal high quality, low cost one expects from Naxos.
The gem of this cd is a lament duet composed by Barbara Strozzi setting words of her adoptive father to music.
The first cut is typical, excellent Monteverdi on a classic theme - nymphs. However, nothing distinguishes this piece from other excellent Monteverdi laments.
The Reluctant Musician is a funny piece filled with excuses for not performing with music that supports the humor - great fun.
Rossi's piece, like the preceding, includes both recitative and aria - a solid piece of baroque composition.
The final piece, Lament of the Castrati, has some incredible small choral group harmonies with a text with a sense of humor.
