Product Description

Lamps that gleam in the city, Lamps that flare on the wall, Lamps that shine on the ways of men, Kindled by men are all.

But the desert of burnt-out ashes, Which only the lost have trod, Dark and barren and flowerless, Is lit by the Hand of God.

About the Author

Ethel Dell's married name is recorded as Ethel Mary Savage. She was born in Streatham, a suburb of London. Her father was a clerk in the City of London and she had an older sister and brother. Her family was middle class and lived a comfortable life. Ethel Dell was a very shy, quiet girl and was content to be dominated by her family. She began to write stories while very young and many of them were published in popular magazines. Beneath her shy exterior, she had a passionate heart and most of her stories were stories of passion and love set in India and other British colonial possessions. They were considered to be very racy and her cousins would pull out pencils to try and count up the number of times she used the words: passion, tremble, pant and thrill. Ethel Dell worked on a novel for several years, but it was rejected by eight publishers. Finally the publisher T. Fisher Unwin bought the book for their First Novel Library, a series which introduced a writer's first book. This book, titled The Way of an Eagle, was published in 1912 and by 1915 it had gone through thirty printings. The Way of an Eagle is very characteristic of Ethel M. Dell's novels. There is a very feminine woman, an alpha male, a setting in India, passion galore liberally mixed with some surprisingly shocking violence and religious sentiments sprinkled throughout. While readers adored Ethel M. Dell's novels, critics hated them with a passion; but she did not care what the critics thought. She considered herself a good storyteller - nothing more and nothing less. Ethel M. Dell continued to write novels for a number of years. She made quite a lot of money, from 20,000 to 30,000 pounds a year, but remained quiet and almost pathologically shy.

Very entertaining romance set in British Colonial India just prior to the Sepoy Mutiny.
A beautiful young woman, Stella, travels to India to visit her Soldier brother, Tommy. She is ostracized by local British society for traveling without a chaperone/companion.
Not wishing to bring shame to her brother, she accepts a marriage proposal from handsome British officer, Ralph Dacre. However, deceitful Ralph has a wife back home in England.
Tommy's friend, Captain Monck, discovers this fact after the couple have left on their bridal trip. Captain Monck is a superior type of soldier, stealthy and capable of infiltrating native society on undercover intelligence missions. He privately accosts Dacre and convinces him to quit the marriage on threat of exposure. Monck fakes Dacre's death and consoles the supposed widow.
Monck loves Stella, but feels that he isn't good enough for her. He leaves her for another mission. Unfortunately, she is pregnant and still friendless. There is more bad news to come... The Sepoys are planning a rebellion against the British Army.
This is a fast-paced, angst-ridden romance from early in the Twentieth century.
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really, really romantic and passionate! You can't go wrong read it - you'll fall in love again and again!, September 11, 2009
This review is from: The Lamp in the Desert (Paperback)
Another great book by Edith M. Dell, one of her best romantic stories, I've always loved it. Dell's work is a perfect example of a love story - wildly romantic without ever getting pornographic. Fast paced, breathless, REAL men, seeking REAL woman, women being swept off their feet, yet who are in control - well, not always ;) - it's hard to believe she wrote this so long ago, but perhaps those were the days when passion, love, excitement were REAL!

Some plots involve, abduction, and attempted forced seduction but these will end with redemption and happiness. These novels stand up so well to the test of time, which makes one want to get lost in the world of Dell!

The writing is excellent, the characters believable in their actions, (except that why can't we all find men as believable as these?) and the story line and plot just as or more exciting eighty years after it was written. It's a romance but far better written and imagined than what we can find in the current crop of romance novels.

Really, really romantic and passionate! You can't go wrong read it - you'll fall in love again and again!

Not much of a challenge to read. Enjoyed it just the same. It was a change from the modern world and therefore, I recommend it.
