5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Mahamudra book, December 15, 2004
This review is from: Lamp of Mahamudra: The Immaculate Lamp that Perfectly and Fully Illuminates the Meaning of Mahamudra, the Essence of all Phenomena (Paperback)
Great little book on Mahamudra--my favorite one. I read it a long time ago; it succeeded in getting me seriously interested in Mahamudra. It amazes me how sometimes so much can be said in a very short space while other times (and authors) can say so little in a very large space! This one is short and sweet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essence Mahamudra, November 29, 2011

This review is from: Lamp of Mahamudra: The Immaculate Lamp that Perfectly and Fully Illuminates the Meaning of Mahamudra, the Essence of all Phenomena (Paperback)
The 'Lamp of Mahamudra' provides a short and pithy introduction to Essence Mahamudra, a meditation practice that traces its origin to Saraha and Maitripa. Dzogchen Trekcho and Essence Mahamudra offer the clearest and most accessible paths to enlightenment that one is likely to encounter in this dark age of materialism. There are good teachers available for both traditions, but if you find yourself unable to meet one, you can do no better than to avail yourself of the works of Tsele Natsok Rangdrol. There are five in translation:
Lamp of Mahamudra
Empowerment Empowerment and the Path of Liberation: Tsele Natsok Rangdrol
The Heart of the Matter Heart Lamp: Lamp of Mahamudra and The Heart of the Matter
The Mirror of Mindfulness Mirror of Mindfulness
The Circle of the Sun Meditation Differently: Phenomenological-Psychological Aspects of Tibetan Buddhist (Mahamudra and Snying-Thig Practices from Original Tibetan Source)

You will want to supplement these with the works of Dakpo Tashi Namgyal:
Clarifying the Natural State (Perhaps the best meditation manual in general publication)Clarifying the Natural State: A Principal Guidance Manual for Mahamudra
Crystal Clear (Thrangu's commentary on Namgyal's root text)Crystal Clear: Practical Advice for Mahamudra Meditators
Mahamudra: The Moonlight by Lobsang P. Lhalungpa)Mahamudra: The Moonlight -- Quintessence of Mind and Meditation
If you find yourself making progress in your sitting practice and looking for further instruction on Essence Mahamudra, you can find it in the works of Rangjung Dorje (3rd Karmapa), Wangchuk Dorje (9th Karmapa), Kalu Rinpoche, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, and many others. There are dozens of great books in publication, and they will eventually lead you to a living guru. Emaho!
