I really enjoy writing with fountain pens. Normally I always buy fountain pens with a gold nib.

The black nib, and design of this pen did not in anyway appeal to me. However, based on a recommendation I tried this pen.

Normally with EXTRA FINE nibs, either there is a ink flow problem, skipping etc.... or the nib is not truly an extra fine and you get too much ink or even leaking. NOT SO with this pen. In my opinion this is a true EXTRA FINE nib. The ink flow is truly extraordinary.

The pen feels great and I can write and write without hand fatigue. The balance and control is fantastic.

This is the perfect fountain pen for everyday office use -- the nib is strong enough to impress on 'carbonless copies', yet flexible enough for comfortable light pressure.

The included ink cartridge is a little watery or 'light' (I prefer a darker ink), and I'm having difficulty finding LAMY-branded cartridges locally; I'd be interested in seeing this Safari Al-Star pen bundled with a converter for a few dollars more.

I've had a Lamy AL-Star for over 15 years. I love the pen. It's got a fantastic weight (but you need the cap on the non-writing end of the pen or the balance isn't quite right).

The ultra-fine point can gum up if it's not regularly used (and I've only used Lamy ink). It washes easily enough.

In fact, I have more than one... They're just great pens.

i am online today to order a replacement of this lovely pen. i used to use fountain pens long ago - bought myself a waterman when i got my phd, and i buy fountain pens as gifts for college and graduate school graduations. but i got tired of replacing my own lost ones, so i stopped using them myself. then, i recently bought noodlers ink, and their free pens... i was hooked on fountain pens again, but never will i again be hoodwinked by pen prices. still, i ventured back into the individuality of pens by buying this lamy because of the good reviews, and i will not search for another style. i'm not ever buying another expensive pen in my life. in fact, i'm kicking myself at the need to spend the $ to replace this one - so you can see i'm no pen collector! - but i have to do it. i'm going to convert it the aerometric style (eyedropper refill, instead of the piston refillable cartridge), and then it will be fountain pen heaven for me. (at [...] you can get the noodlers ink eyedropper system for converting pens from cartridges to fill-the-barrel-with-an-eyedropper style, and instructions. as of this writing, the converter "system" is $3 - get it and you'll never need either a disposable or refillable cartridge again.)
