Editorial Reviews

Review

During the darkest days of World War II, as bombs fell on the home population of Great Britain and the firestorm that had raged across Europe was poised to engulf the world, there were precious few ways for the Allies to strike back at their enemy. One of their most powerful weapons was the magnificent Avro Lancaster bomber, with its legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, its enormous bomb bay, and its steadily improving electronic countermeasures that enabled it to strike deep into the heart of Nazi Germany. With wonderfully detailed photographs of various crew positions, instrumentation, engines, and armament, along with archival WWII photographs, browsing through the pages of Lancaster: RAF Heavy Bomber is the next best thing to being with the pilots and crews of those thrilling days of yesteryear. -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Photo-Guide to an RAF Heavyweight!, November 28, 2009
This review is from: Lancaster : Raf Heavy Bomber (Living History Series, Charlottesville, Va) (Living History Series: World War II) (Paperback)
Part of the 'Living History' series, this 1996 Howell Press book by Dan Patterson and Ron Dick presents a photo-and-text introduction to the Avro Lancaster. The RAF's heavy hitter of World War II, the Lanc came to personify Bomber Command and its remorseless nocturnal bombing campaign against Germany.

Ron Dick, a former RAF Air Vice-Marshal, weighs in first with a 12-page summary of the Lanc's development and combat career. The remaining 52 pages are given over to Dan Patterson's evocative color photographs of surviving Lancasters, divided between close-up shots of the cockpit, turrets, crew positions, etc. and general view of the Lancs in the air and on the ground. One shot in particular - showing a group of re-enactors posing under the bomb bay - is especially useful in illustrating the size of the the Lancaster. That sucker was huge!

Bomber fans will enjoy the Patterson/Dick tribute. The short but informative text and compelling photos make for a thumb's up rating! Recommended.
