Book Description

Ut Press Fine Arts Series March 1, 2009

An established American artist with a growing international reputation, Lance Letscher transforms found paper into works of art that are mysteriously evocative, often playful, and graphically beautiful. Letscher precisely cuts and recombines scraps of old books and letters, children's school exercises, recipes, album covers, and other ephemera into motifs that suggest forms abstract and representational. In these collages, which vary from small works on paper to elaborate constructions as large as nine by fourteen feet, Letscher emerges as a skilled colorist and abstractionist who allows blocks of color and fragments of phrases to open up intriguing avenues of memory and association.

Lance Letscher: Collage is the first full-length monograph on this important artist. It presents a catalog of 118 works dating from 2001 to 2008, accompanied by essays that explore Letscher's artistic development and place in contemporary art. Charles Dee Mitchell, a well-known critic and arts writer, recounts the artist's journey from academically trained improvisational sculptor to creator of collages using found materials. Brooke Davis Anderson traces Letscher's fruitful connections with prominent Outsider and self-taught artists, including James Castle, Martín Ramírez, Adolf Wölfli, and the quilters of Gee's Bend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous, transformative book, April 21, 2009
This review is from: Lance Letscher: Collage (Ut Press Fine Arts Series) (Hardcover)
"Lance Letscher: Collage" is a gorgeous, transformative love song to paper ephermera. Old books, album covers, hand-written notebook pages, and other examples of cultural flotsam and jetsam, are cut into strips and circles and wedges to make exquisite collages. The colors, textures, snatches of phrases, and bits of image swirl and cinch to create images that are bright and alive. This is a stunning book, beautifully produced, worth every dollar and then some.

I enjoyed seeing what can be done with torn up excercise books and material fished out of dumpsters behind second-hand bookshops. The colours and shapes created, sometimes set against a background of sepia shopping lists or old letters were quite beautiful. Circles transformed into wheels of colour, cascading down the page, but there was no information on how these effects were achieved, what tools were used; how the creative process took place. That was disappointng. But as a book to provide inspiration and ideas, I would recommend Lance Letscher's 'Collage'.
