Editorial Reviews

Review

The publication of the book Lance Out Loud (Glitterati Incorporated),written by his mother, Pat Loud, and edited by close friend and renowned photographer Christopher Makos, gives us a huge slice of Lance Loud in 240 color pages of photos, journals, artwork, and ephemera that paints the richest, deepest portrait of him to date. Kudos to Pat and Christopher for letting the images, notes, souvenirs, and moving photographs of Lance speak for him. (Christopher Harrity The Advocate, March 2, 2015)

In Lance Out Loud, you get to know Lance as closely as his mom Pat Loud + famous friends, including Andy Warhol + Rufus Wainwright did, through this entertainingly beautiful + heartfelt intimate portrait of America’s first reality TV Star + gay icon. (Yvette de las Nueces March 19, 2015)

This book is in the style of a Warholian scrapbook, with pictures, articles and remembrances of Lance Loud.

Loud became a most unlikely star when he was featured on the PBS documentary series "An American Family" in the early 1970s. Shocking the nation, he was a defiant and proud young gay man... unheard of just a couple of years after the Stonewall Riots kickstarted the homosexual-rights movement.

"Lance Out Loud" evokes the distinctive path of Loud's life following the series, traveling in the rarefied punk-rock, Pop-Art, celebrity-fashion worlds of the '70s and '80s.

I bought this new, still in shrink wrap, and the spine was already totally cracked. Not sure if it's a cheap publisher or if I just got a bum copy. Aside from that, I found the book very entertaining. It is about 90% photos, usually full-page but some pages had multiple, smaller images. Essay-form remembrances from some of Lance's friends and family decorate the book, funny and poignant, like Lance himself. I was hoping for more "artifacts"--more correspondence, some diaries maybe, vintage reviews and/or interviews, mag clippings, show posters, etc. But it's still fun to get this big colorful eyeful of Lance's handsome, goofy mug, and the brief accounts of his adventures & misdeeds. I think he will continue to loom larger and larger in cultural significance/iconography. He was truly a trailblazer whose ultimate accolades may be yet to come.

For those of us who were intrigued by the Loud family phenomenon, particularly Lance, who was by far the most memorable of the group, this is a loving tribute put together by his mom, Pat, and edited by his friend, Christopher Makos. Chock full of photos and memories, it very much resemble a scrapbook. Although I would have preferred a bit more insight into Lance and what made him tick, his mom makes it clear that Lance was such complicated fellow, that it's unlikely anyone could have ever gotten into his head and understood him completely - and maybe even he himself didn't. So we have the next best thing - a scrapbook that will either bring back memories of an era some of us lived through, or shed light on it to those who were not yet old enough or even born to understand it.
