"Land of the Dead" is a very paint-by-numbers song; "Twilight of the Dead" is better, but not much. In comparing this to past Misfits output (and I DO think the "new" Misfits are just as good, though different, from THE Misfits line-up that many blindly obtuse "purists" insist is the only good period, the one with Danzig...all I can say is that such people are missing out on many, many great songs!), I'd say it most closely resembles "Project 1950", and not just because of Jerry's vocals. It isn't rippingly heavy and fast like the bulk of "Famous Monsters", nor is it in the same vein as "American Psycho", though it is closer to that. It IS, in fact, reminiscent of some very old Misfits material, the more 50's-era-sounding stuff of "Static Age" and various singles. Hence, take some "Static Age", mix it with the pop sensiblities of "American Psycho", and give it the sound of "Project 1950's", and you've probably got these 2 songs. Oddly, some of the vocals sound ill-fitting and frankly off-kilter, though Jerry does an energetic and heartfelt job, as usual. The SOUND on this is terrible, not because of any production or playing faults...I blame the clear vinyl (this was the 3rd printing on green; 1st and 2nd were red then orange). I was afraid that my needle had gone bad, but no. This is really more of a collector's item, anyway, as I'm sure these will eventually surface on some future cd. Real kool kover, ALMOST 5 stars if not for the run-of-the-mill songs and sound quality. But I remain behind Misfits to the end!!!

Although it is only 2 songs, The 2009/2010 version of the MISFITS can still rock.

I bought this at a Misfits show. December 10, 2009, Charlotte, NC to be precise. If you saw the Misfits live in 2009 and bought your copy, then you know that you got the clear orange vinyl, becuase that is the only version sold at shows and you cannot get it at Hot Topic. Jerry, ROBO, and Dez did perform both "Land of the Dead" and "Twilight of the Dead" at the show and though they are not bad songs, most Misfit fans just want the vinyl and will download "Land of the Dead".
The lyrics are not exactly thought provoking. In fact I can see Jerry Only now scribbling these lyrics down on a napkin at Denny's while waitng for the bus driver to get out of the bathroom. Robo has some solid drumming, and Dez's guitar is the highlight of this release. If you are a Fiend you either have this or want this. If you are not a Fiend, what do you care? |
