Well, I had high expectations for this game. Ever since my dad took away my PS3, I pulled out my old XBOX. I found this game while browsing, and sine I love zombies, I decided to get it. You play as some farmer, and how he survives the attack, and I'll be honest. Just after reaching the third level, it gets really boring. For its time the graphics aren't the worst, but if...

I really enjoyed this game. The suspense and scares were plentiful, and it challenged me as a gamer.

I've been a long-time fan of zombie films and survival horror games--since the original Resident Evil on the Playstation--and feel that this game comes as close to putting one into the role of a Romero hero as any game has done thus far. The enemies are relentless, the ammo supply is just barely adequate, and the music chills the spine. And the story is engaging and interesting--a worthy prequel to the Land Of The Dead film.

This game has been unfairly maligned. If you like zombie films, and survival horror games, you owe it to yourself to check out this under-appreciated masterpiece.

Don't listen to the haters, they don't know what they are talking about(for the most part). This is not supposed to be an Unreal Tournament or Halo killer. You are not going to be running around with weapons and ammo everywhere, slaughtering wave after wave of the undead, doing triple wall jumps and then finding a vehicle to shoot or run over the 5 or so zombies slowly walking towards you.

This is a game based off George A. Romero's zombie universe. With that being said, this game hits the mark. It's you alone versus the growing army of the dead. Weapons are rare, ammuntion is sparse. How will you deal with those 5 zombies when you have a revolver with a few bullets and your trusty shovel? THAT is why this game hits the mark. It's a game that captures the atmosphere of the 4 Romero zombie movies, giving the player an overwhelming sense of dread, isolation, and despair. Moving from place to place looking for a safe haven and maybe, some supples. Being a huge fan of his movies, I knew what to expect and what not to expect and this game delivered on all counts. The graphics and music are good, not great, but then again this is a budget title.

The only legitamate gripe the detractors have for this game is the hit detection. This may have been because the game was rushed for a Halloween release. Sometimes the headshots happen and sometimes they don't. It's either bad hit detection or the game making you be really precise with your gun shots - after all, do you know how hard it is to shoot someone square in the head even from 15ft away? Try it at a shooting range. If you can do that, try it again while running. It's not as easy as some games make it.

Other "gripes" I have seen are somewhat laughable. The controller too sensitive? There is something called "controller sensitivity" in the options menu - try using it. The .22 is not powerful? I think someone needs to brush up on their firearms knowledge. It takes too long to reload? Maybe for you, but the plasma gun I found in the shed fires 400 blasts a second and no need to reload - like all real life weapons.

Like I said, if you are a fan of the Romero zombie films, aren't looking for a extremely fast paced FPS, don't mind the game being realistic with it's firearms, and love blasting the undead, you would do well to pick this up, especially at $30.

4.0 out of 5 stars Zombies...I Love Zombies., November 28, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Land of the Dead (Video Game)
I'll be honest. If I were a game reviewer professionally I couldn't give this game very high marks. There are a lot of things wrong with this title that would be unforgivable in the "true reviewer's" eyes. That being said, this is still a really cool game.

You're either a Romero fan or you're not. I love zombie films, zombie games, zombie dolls, and zombie brains. I think it's safe to say that I love zombies. Romero is the Zombie King, bar none. Road to Fiddler's Green lets me be the zombie killer. I love that. I get to live in Romero's dark and twisted world for a while. There aren't a ton of weapons and ammo. You fight with what you can find. The zombies are creepy and it's fun to blow their heads off. The game is plenty challenging and will keep you entertained for quite some time. These are some of the good things. Unfortunately, I'm forced to talk about some of the bad things because you should know about them before you buy this game.

The targeting system is laughable. God, it's terrible. There is one level that this is so frustrating it made me want to put the game down. The accuracy is really wrong. There were times that I fired and knew I missed but the Zombie's head blew apart. There were other times that I would be trying to get a clean shot and the reticule would go really slow and then jump across the screen. It got to the point of stupidity at times that you needed accuracy and speed.

The gameplay is very linear. You can't go the wrong way. For some people this is not a problem but I would have liked some free-roam within the levels. There are times that you'll get a little confused and turned around but you'll recover quickly. The levels are not complicated you should be able to navigate them quickly. It's the zombies that will slow you down.

Over-all this is a good game because it lets you play in the world that Romero created. I'm a Romero fan so this is a great title for me. This isn't a game for children, it's gory, violent, and depraived but that's what makes it great. If you love Romero's work then you'll enjoy this game for what it is.

This game is cheap. Not cheap in the time spent playing it sense or stupid "I got jipped by this cheap game" sense, but it is actually cheap money wise. But you didn't really need me to tell you that.

What I can tell you is that this game is awesome. Sure, it's not Halo 2 or Half-Life, but it doesn't claim to be. It offers some really great elements as far as storyline and realism goes. Now, I know what your thinking, if it was so realistic, it wouldn't have zombies because zombies aren't real. That is beside the point. And anyway, don't you buy games because they are fun, not because they remind you of real life. For example, you have to be precise with your shots, and choose when to use them, because ammo is not a plenty in this game.

What this game lacks in flashy graphics, it makes up for in one key area, an area that is important in the original Romero movies, as well as Land of the Dead. Melee weapons. you have a host of different melee weapons to use, each with its own special uses. Such weapons include a hammer, a baseball bat, a golf club, and a shovel. Also, you can pick up a fire axe. If you just had a bad day at work, and take it from me, i have had them, just sit down with this game, pick up a fire axe, and imagine that the zombie horde is really your boss. It truly helps you calm down, after removing his jaw, arms, and legs with said axe.

but anyway, this game is good for what it presents, and that is good, clean zombie filled mayhem.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could Have been ALOT better, March 5, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Land of the Dead (Video Game)
As a guy who has seen almost every zombie movie ever made, I had to pick this one up. While it's not entirely dissapointing, certain aspects did upset me. For example, the Xbox Live multiplayer levels are too small..which is bad because playing on Live is pretty much the most fun you can have with this game as you'll find the single player campaign gets old pretty quick. However, the first couple of missions on single player are classic; like when you're inside your house and they bust down the doors to get to you and when you go through the cornfield at night to get to your neighbors house only to find them zombie food. After that it becomes one boring level after another. Another complaint is, as other reviewers have quoted, the zombies seem to take a fixed number of shots to take down. The only weapon capable of killing with one shot is the revolver and you literally have to line it up perfectly in the top-middle part of their head for it to work. Anyway, this is a VERY different game which ya might like for under $30.

It's not a masterpiece game, but Land Of The Dead: Road To Fiddler's Green is a good game. The graphics aren't that good at all, but the gameplay is cool. I was expecting more, but this is the best you'll get for a game that wasn't really talked about.

If you're looking for a good cheap game to play, this game is perfect to play.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not innovative in the slightest., November 1, 2005
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Land of the Dead (Video Game)
Land of the dead is the latest zombie movie by George Romero. He has done a stack of movies with some place or time being 'of the dead.' Some are really quite good. This game was unfortunately a cheap knockoff. It has some good qualities, but I doubt it's worth the play time for most people.

The graphics were decent only for a game three years ago. In spite of that, the game would lag quite often. I find this unacceptable on an x-box game. The most frustrating part of this was that the game would lock up for half a second whenever a zombie spawned, so you always knew when one was around the corner. If you happen to be turning when that lockup occurs, you end up looking in a random direction. Given that the levels are so bland, it's easy to get turned around when this happens.

The pistols and rifles were few but enjoyable. The glock and .22 were good when you had enough time to get one or two at a distance. The revolver did well in close quarters when you might have to suddenly take one out and didn't have much time to run. The shotgun, automatic rifle, and sniper rifle were fun since they were so damaging, but they brought the difficulty of the game to almost nil when you had ammo for them.

The game had disappointing melee weapons, though. The thing about the zombie genre is the idea that /anyone/ could be a hero/main char in a zombie movie. All you need is a ball-peen hammer to stop one. In the game, though, the melee weapons just do some raw damage so that x number of hits kills one. And at that it's 4-8 hits. You could only take on more than one at a time in melee if you had a lot of room to run around. Location-specific damage would have been a great addition in this area. It's no use if you happen to get the drop on a zombie. A solid hit to the back of the head is no different than a front body blow. The developers made a mistake by adding 'kung-fu fists' (a semi-hidden weapon.) The fists allow you to kill any zombie in one or two melee hits and the fists again brought the difficulty to almost nil.

The damage structure was weird, too. if the zombie was unarmed, it took 4 shots to kill with a .22 (2 kung-fu), 8 shots if it had a weapon (1 kung fu). It's just a blatant game mechanic thrown in. Kind of annoying.

The level design turned out to be very basic as far as far as modern first person shooters go. Hallways and room layouts that don't even begin to resemble real buildings and only served to channel you from one goal to another. It's very reminiscent of older FPS games that couldn't afford to have large-scale levels.

The one thing they did get right was make the zombies move after you no matter what damage you did to them. If you shoot off a leg, they use their arms to crawl (quite effectively) at you, shoot off arms and they try to bite, and shoot off three limbs and they resemble a fish out of water and can still manage to make some progress towards you (Romero zombies stop at nothing.)

The gameplay was a good representation of the genre. The first level has you running to your attic to get your gun. You get cornered on the top floor so you have to knock the zombies down and run passed them to get back into the open where you can outmaneuver them. You grab your revolver from the shed after you run out of .22 ammo and finally have to resort to your shovel. Unfortunately, it doesn't get better than that for the rest of the game. Regardless of the level, the strategy is basically the same. If there's a single zombie, you take it out with melee. With two zombies, you take one out with a gun or just shoot its leg for slow it down and take out the second one with melee. Any extra zombies you need to take out with a gun or grenade since you don't stand a chance in melee. That's it. You hit them, run, hit them, run. If you can't run, you just use more ammo. If you're out of ammo and you can't run, then you die without question. I'm not trying to compare the game to Far Cry or any other strategic FPS, but the developers failed to make the gameplay vary from level to level.

Save a couple of levels with the sniper rifle, every level was like this: Kill the zombies in the room, check the drawers and closets for ammo, kill the zombies in the long, winding hallway, kill the zombies in the next room, find a locked door, go though another hallway to the next room, check the drawers for the key to the door, go through the locked door, finish the level. It didn't matter if you were in the sewers or an office building, the scenario didn't change.

Overall, It was fun in that it was a first person zombie game. Shooting off limbs and still have them come after you is a fun experience. The game just wasn't innovative in any respect and could have been developed better three years ago if someone had put some effort into it.
