If you have ever enjoyed the series Little House on the Prairie, Land of Dust &Tears will resemble the times and location. It was May of 1866 when Jan and his brother Karl's family would arrive in America from Norway. They would settle in the Nebraska prairie lands called RiverBend. With mixes of celebration, sorrow and calamity you will learn facets of God's truth while witnessing a steadfast love for God that the Thorensen's had.

Jan Thorensen would always follow the leading of the Lord and as his life unfolds it will warm your heart how the Lord entrusts him to father beyond his children and build community while mending broken hearts. Author Vikki Kestell I rate as fantastic in her ability to engage the reader in the plot and skillfully craft the rough changes of life without leaving the reader to feel there is no hope.

Fire, deaths and tragedies would shake the community to the core but God's strong Sovereign hand will bleed hope into the reader to realize that our God operates out of love and purpose. In the circumstances of your own life, especially if wronged, you will be challenged to look to the Word for your attitude and response. Serving the Lord, you will see, is not void of heartache and loss. The rewards however as evidenced in this book, is that God provides peace and direction to those willing to call upon Him. Too, you will better understand that wrongful overt character assassination may have roots stemming from past issues never resolved.

I can guarantee many that read this first book of Kestell's will be hooked on her as an author. She has 6 books following well worth exploring. I give her book a 5 star rating.

I was drawn into this story from the very first gripping paragraph. Vikki told the Thoresens' story in a way that really did make me feel I was there. I was engrossed, learning what life was like back in the days of the prairie being settled, and wondering what would happen next. Definitely not predictable! Vikki's writing also encouraged me in my own walk with Jesus as I related to the heart struggles her wonderful characters went through in this story. The history is fascinating and the spiritual lessons are timeless. This is a fabulous beginning for new readers of the Prairie Heritage series. I definitely recommend A Rose Blooms Twice as the perfect next choice to follow this story. I plan to read each book of the whole series again while waiting for the final conclusion to the Prairie Heritage series to come out in November 2014.

This is the kind of Christian book I enjoy. God is real in their lives. They talk to and with Him. They lean on Him and give thanks through thick and thin. This book shows what a real Christian walk is like.

I was very disappointed when a turned the last page only to find out there was no ending at all. It just stopped. I understand series writers encourage readers to read their next book in the series. This is not the way to do it.

If you haven't yet started this series, start here! You will be thrilled by the depth of the writing and characters that become friends that you long to know more and more about. The final book of the series will come out in November and I can't wait to visit with them again. I am a voracious reader and this series is one of my all-time favorites. I try to slow down to savor it - wanting to complete the books but not wanting them to end. If you are reading this series, you will be thrilled to add it to your collection and eagerly await the next installment. Everything I enjoy about reading is found in Vikki's writing. Looking forward to more! Thank you, Vikki, for being a willing vessel. God bless you and the readers you touch!

I'm grew up reading Little House on the Prairie and watching the television series. I'm very active in researching my own family history and watch for details that bring meaning and understanding of their lives.

This prequel is a wonderful story...a demonstration of Godly Jan in his determination to follow guidance in his life and dealing with others. Though characters are fictional, the situations are typical of those years and the challenges of homesteading,

I highly recommend Land of Dust & Tears.

Brothers Jan (Yahn) and Karl Thoresen have left their native land of Norway and braved many perils and hardships to bring their families to America—the land of freedom and hope. Like thousands of others, Jan and his wife Elli long for the opportunity of a better life and a future for their children.

After enduring an ocean crossing and the arduous journey west, they encounter a land so vast and wide that it defies mastery. Jan finds that his struggles are not only with the land, but with a restless and unmanageable heart. Will Jan find a way to overcome this wild land or will the prairie master him?

Land of Dust & Tears is also published as Part 1 of Wild Heart on the Prairie, Book 2 of the series, A Prairie Heritage. Land of Dust & Tears is priced to introduce you to this beautiful saga.

The author suggests that you follow your read of Land of Dust & Tears with A Rose Blooms Twice, Book 1 of A Prairie Heritage, and then read Wild Heart on the Prairie, which includes Land of Dust & Tears (Part 1) and concludes the story in Part 2.

A Prairie Heritage:
Prequel: Land of Dust & Tears
Book 1: A Rose Blooms Twice
