Product Description

Land of Enchantment, Deuter's tenth album, is a glimpse of the magic found in life. Deuter combines acoustic instruments and synthesizers in his customarily skillful fashion. The tracks on this album were recorded in various geographical areas, from France and Hawaii to Santa Fe, and they represent different scenes and experiences. Characteristics from Eastern and Western musical cultures are blended to portray the light-hearted and mystical qualities of each location.

"The message in the music is Light," says Deuter. "Light as opposed to heavy, and light as opposed to darkness. The music is derived from an understanding that life is a gift and from an acceptance of the miracle that it is, that all things exist."

About the Artist

Deuter, one of the first artists on the Kuckuck Schallplatten label, has thirteen titles on Kuckuck Schallplatten, as well as the musical score of a picture poem released on the MonteVideo label entitled The Petrified Forest. They offer his unique uplifting melodies played on flute, guitar and synthesizer, blended with the sounds of nature. His creations incorporate a lightness of spirit, depth of vision, and a musical medley of East and West.

Deuter himself is a product of both East and West. He was born in 1945, in a small village of post-war Germany. As a child, he learned flute and taught himself guitar and harmonica. As a young adult, he worked as a graphic designer and newspaper columnist in Munich, but the musical drive within him persisted. Eckart Rahn, a young record producer at that time, recognized Deuter's talents, and in 1971 released his first recording, D, on the then fledgling Kuckuck label.

Deuter began to go into the mountains to record birds, water and wind to accompany his music. He was one of the first artists to do so and his deep relationship with nature persists to this day. He also began his spiritual search, spending much of his time at an ashram in Poona, India. Deuter was also one of the first artists to blend that Eastern influence into his music. He did that blending in such a gentle fashion that it never jarred Western ears, unaccustomed to Eastern rhythms and tonalities.

Aum and Celebration were his first recordings to spring from this new direction in his life. His 1978 release, Haleakala, was recorded in Poona. This release was a true portrait of Deuter's spiritual quest as well as production talents. Using a four-track tape machine and a progression of sub-mixes down to two tracks, Deuter was able to blend his own performances of two flutes, two guitars, organ synthesizer, and bells percussion along with natural sounds. This sixteen-track requirement he accomplished in the middle of India on just four tracks with an amazing technical fidelity.

Future releases only perfected the recording quality of Deuter's magical music. In his own words, that music takes us to the beautiful place inside where the listener can experience warmth, the playfulness, the love, the compassion, the gentleness. That is the music I want to make for others. And that is just what he has done.

Cicada and Nirvana Road showcase Deuter's remarkable ability to produce music that is more and more danceful, lighter, happier and more playful, full of heart and still have in it somewhere a vision of silence. Call of the Unknown: Selected Pieces 1972-1986, contains a compilation of the most sublime pieces of Deuter's repertoire. Land of Enchantment is Deuter's biggest selling album.

His other recordings for Kuckuck Schallplatten are Ecstasy, Silence is the Answer, San, Sands of Time: Selected Studio & Concert Recordings 1974-1990 and Henon.

We were introduced to Land of Enchantment over 5 years ago and never tire of it. This guy can access our ability to soar. Other favorites come and go and Land of Enchantment just continues to come back. This CD is one of our top gifts for people we really like.

Whenever stress builds up, I put this CD on and go to track 8 (Petite Fleur). The entire collection is soothing, but this particular one is extra-special; it just has a very calming effect.

Deuter's music is at once both typical and defining for the New Age category. It would be possible to use this music to meditate (this is not necessarily a positive statement, as the same could be said for Halpran's music, which I don't like). But it is also very melodic, and active enough to hold my attention. Although gentle, it is not elevator music. This is my wife's favorite recording in this genera.

The last time I saw my father, he was driving me to the airport near Seaside, Florida. He played an old cassette tape while we drove. The sounds were inspiring and I expressed a desire to make a copy of the tape. Instead, he gave me the tape to keep. The cassette was "Land of Enchantment" by Deuter.

A little over a year later, two weeks before I was supposed to visit him, he died unexpectedly.

Six months to the day after his death, I decided to go to massage school at BTI this fall.

Today, I played the cassette for the first time since he gave it to me, and am listening now.

The music is by Deuter, and is probably music I will use a lot during massage. I highly recommend him.

I've had the cassette for years now - but can't locate it at the moment. Time to replace it with a CD. This is one of my all time favorite pieces of music. One has to hear it to appreciate it.

The name "Deuter" was not familiar to me, and in general I am not much interested in "new age" music, although I confess to having owned several albums in the genre over the past few decades. But I saw this at an estate sale for 75 cents, and the notes on the back said recorded in Santa Fe, (although the songs include tracks inspired in Hawaii, France and Peru) so I bought it. I'm pleased. It is nice to hear while driving, or in the background of a Scrabble game. I think most of it is too lively to play while a person is trying to meditate (a practice I gave up in the late '70's) but as a modern version of the lounge music popularized by Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman back in the late '50's, this is a successful release.

I have this album on LP but can't get phono needles any longer and now listen mostly to CDs. This is primarily flute, but with a fair amount of orchestral accompaniment, and could easily be the soundtrack for some movie or nature program. Generally slower tempo, this makes excellent meditative music.
