Product Description

The Van Buskirk family saga continues with the exploration of the Louisiana Territory and the War of 1812.

Held captive by the British aboard the warship HMS Surprise, American lawyer, Francis Scott Key, witnessed the British bombardment of American Fort McHenry through the long, rainy night of September 13th and 14th, 1814. As the sun rose the following morning, illuminating the American flag, still flying, he wrote these words on the back of an envelope:

O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

If you're a fan of historical novels, Jeffry Hepple's latest, "Land of the Free", most certainly should be at the top of your "to be read" list. The book begins just prior to the War of 1812 and follows John "Yank" Van Buskirk along a winding trail through that period of United States history. What makes this book such a pleasure to read is that the author has managed that often times difficult balance between providing enough historical detail about times, places and people to bring the book to life and paint the background scenery, without those same details becoming the bulk of the book and detracting from the storyline.

If you've read Mr. Hepple's other novels, "The Treasure of La Malinche" and, "Gone for a Soldier", you'll recognize where these books are heading. If you haven't had the pleasure of these books yet, be sure to pick them up also. Each stands alone as complete, but they are related.

If I had one wish for this series, it would be that the author had chosen to start his titles earlier in our national anthem, so we would have a hope of more books in the Van Buskirk saga.

Another winner by Mr Hepple! A great sequel to Gone for a Soldier, where you follow along with the next genration of the Van Buskirk family (through the exploration of the Louisiana Territory and the War of 1812). You are able to connect with the character's as they feel real, with real flaws. Mr Hepple is excellent at bringing the past to life, where you are learning history in a very fun way.
