By harlequin-beetle (SF, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Land of Froud (Paperback)
For fans of froud's fantastic art: this book is g-o-l-d, a compendium of paintings from his hard-to-find early works, including "The Wind Between the Stars" and "Master Snickup's Cloak", as well as a peek at his personal illustration work. This collection shows the evolution of his art : from early pen sketches of dreams to his richly wooded forests overflowing with faeries and creatures (that we recognize from his famous Faerie book with Alan Lee, and from his design work on the Dark Crystal)...My favorite aspect is that next to each full-page picture is a caption written by Froud explaining the legends, folklore and poems that inspired each image...His ideas would develop from seeing twigs intertwined with cobwebs, Sioux legends of man-eating hills (and other unusual folklore), dilapidated buildings, nursery rhymes, and of course ~dreams~. The illustration of poisonous flower faeries, spriggins, and elves is my personal favorite; he reminds us that "It is wise to remember that faeries are not always good".......His style is noticable darker in this book than in his more current work. He expresses a very macabre sense of humor and shows that many things are truly not as they appear. (What does the top of a forest really look like? Does it notice when you walk through? Who is the Greenman?) I highly recommend this book: Froud's paintings are beautiful and magical portals into the faerieland he created...when you flip the pages...you almost see...a flicker of wings...and want to believe......

Must Have,
This review is from: The Land of Froud (Paperback)
This book is trully amazing. It's the holy grail to Froud fans. My husband got it for me two years ago for Valentines Day. Since then he can't even begin to top it. The art work is great and top quality. You can see a lot of later work right there in the making. As someone who loves this art enough to actually tattoo it on me Buy It. You won't regret a thing.
