If you like Sally Timms I can't see how you wouldn't dig this. If you like the Mekons, same thing.
There are some originals, by Timms and Jon Langford, and some covers. You've got her beautiul voice, an excellent group of musicians, and a casual let's just play some music and have a good time vibe - an attitude you can call rock and roll, punk, etc. Sounds good to me whatever you call it. I love how they aren't bound by any templates. They use the violin, the accordian, the tuba, mandolin, and other non *rock* instruments, just cause they seemed to like the sound. Well, I do too. Personal Faves (in no particular order): Covers: No More Rides - Will Oldham. Hypnotic, slow. Hard to describe but it grew on me powerfully. Everytime She Walks in the Room - Jackie DeShannon. Classic, romantic country song. It Says Here - Stuart Moxham. Dreamy. Elegant guitar work and singing. Originals: Longing, Madness and Lust - Tuneful, rollicking, foot-stomper. Deep - Kind of lullabyish. Great slow dance tune. I got this album when it came out and I'm still listening to it. It still moves me. Highly recommended. |
