Set in beautiful Scotland, this novel fills a reader's mind with scenes of the lovely countryside, described in such detail that a reader feels they are there. The characters are both charming and flawed, suffering from emotional wounds that have drawn their previous faith into the depths of doubt. Their healing depends on their choices.
There are various twists in the plot that take a reader by surprise, but the ending is satisfying.
While I was caught up in this story, at times it dragged. Rather than 400 plus pages, 300 would have been sufficient to tell the story. The biggest area of interrupting the reading flow was the excessive use of the Gaelic language. While a little goes a long way, too much becomes distracting. I ended up leaping over passages and ignoring it. Having a "Gaelic guide for translation" at the end of the book was not helpful, especially when you're using a kindle.
Overall, a sweet story with a faith-building message of putting the Lord first in our lives.

Truthfully, I have never read a book that was so full of the phrase "I love you" or that contained so much shedding of tears by characters. In the first instance, the words upheld the strong romantic narrative. In the second, the tears were nearly always shed out of pure joy rather than anger or sadness. This tale is truly one of romance and the meeting of two souls who are destined to be together. It is also a novel with a strong Christianity influence that applauds the power of prayer, faith, and trust.
Author Norma Gail's characters are strong and nicely rounded out and easy to identify with. I especially enjoyed the Scottish history and the adept interspersing of common phraseology and its meaning in this book. This was done very skillfully without detracting from the storyline.
The author has a knack for writing great descriptions. Readers can probably almost feel the dampness of the endless mist and rain, as well as envision the dress and accents of the people. Personally, as a woman who relishes ethnic fare, I very much enjoyed the enticing descriptions of foods native to Scotland. As far as the story itself, some parts are a bit implausible but that is a matter of opinion rather than a critique.
One thing I found a bit distracting in this book is something that is encountered frequently in novels: descriptive chapter titles.Read more ›
The story does drag a bit at times and occasionally seems disjointed because of it. But all in all, a great read.
