5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful. Saved me a lot of time.
I ran into this book by accident. I've been working on revising a book I wrote back in 1990 (still for sale on this website for some reason) about Davy Crockett. Knowing nothing about genealogy, I found this book to be quite impressive.

I ran into this book by accident. I've been working on revising a book I wrote back in 1990 (still for sale on this website for some reason) about Davy Crockett. Knowing nothing about genealogy, I found this book to be quite impressive.

This book covers just about everything a researcher could want regarding old land and property records in the United States. I've had great difficulty pinning down Tennessee records from the 1820s and 1830s, yet now that I have this book, it's a breeze. That alone has saved me hours and money.

Basically, this book is divided into several parts listing each state with the location of records. There is a wealth of information on just about everything regarding property and land records dating back centuries. One of the key features of this book is it gives many cross references and sources for more information. Subsequently, I find myself adding more and more books to my personal reference library based on the references cited in this book. As an author and a publisher myself, I commend the author and publisher of this book on a fine, fine reference work.

I'm giving this book 5 stars hands down. This is just one heck of a resource. If you are an amateur or advanced genealogist, this book is a must for your library. I've never been interested in genealogy, but as a researcher and publisher of historical books, I found this book to be of immense research value. This is not a book that you "read" in the traditional sense. It's a reference book to be consulted. I used the index quite a lot, and the references at the end of each chapter gave me more leads for further information.

Good basic introduction to initial property research in U.S. Describes various historical types of land transfers by state and Federal govenment. Includes British, French, and Spanish transfers prior to acqusition by U.S.

The work does not discuss later transfers after initial individual patent or ownership which would be of interest to someone following the history of a single piece of property. For this purpose, a book on using courthouse information would be additional help.
