Pretty good - depending on what you want, December 29, 2006
This review is from: Land Rover - Series One to Freelander (Hardcover)
This is a pretty good book. it's a bit short, and a bit 'dry'. It breaks up the LR development into 'chunks' based around major redesigns, and within each section broadly describes the yearly changes they made to the models.
Sure, there's quick discussions of the varieties of LR's made: ambulances, etc. And the obligatory talk of how the engines were upgraded, etc.
And there's a little discussion of management issues, their being the profitable division of british leyland... but not much.
The worst part is the reptition. In the main text, they may have a brief discussion on LR almost merging with another company. Then, they'll have a 'side bar' with no new information, but repeating much of the main text! You have this happen several times, and it begins to feel like they're just 'filling space'.
Yet, I still give it 4 stars? If you're HUngERING for information on the history and founding of Land Rover, this is an acceptable book that will whet your appetite. But you must think of it more as an incomplete, brief model-by-model breakdown than a history of the management, decisions, and challenges of the brand.

Typical Land Rover: looks grand but ultimately a letdown, October 7, 2009
This review is from: Land Rover - Series One to Freelander (Hardcover)
This book is alright. Covers mainly Series, Defender, Discovery, and Freelander. Surprisingly, not much on Range Rover.
It reads too much like a glowing testimonial for the company. Would have preferred more unbiased reporting of Rover's ups and downs through the years.
There's plenty of archive photos but only 8 pages are in color.
No way this is worth thirty-five dollars. A paperback came out more recently but it's still twenty bucks.
Land Rover: Series One to Freelander (Crowood Autoclassics)
On a personal note, I owned a Freelander and I'd give it the same 3-star rating!
