"A serious and notable contribution to racial understanding."—Saturday Review of Literature

Standing Bear's dismay at the condition of his people, when after sixteen years' absence he returned to the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation, may well have served as a catalyst for the writing of this book, first published in 1933. In addition to describing the customs, manners, and traditions of the Teton Sioux, Standing Bear (as Richard N. Ellis notes in the foreword) "also offered more general comments about the importance of native cultures and values and the status of Indian people in American society." With the assistance of Melvin R. Gilmore, curator of ethnology at the University of Michigan, and his niece and secretary, Warcaziwin, Standing Bear sought to tell the white man "just how we lived as Lakotans." His book, generously interspersed with personal reminiscences and anecdotes, includes chapters on child rearing, social and political organization, the family, religion, and manhood. Standing Bear's views on Indian affairs and his suggestions for the improvement of white-Indian relations are presented in the two closing chapters.

Standing Bear's My People the Sioux (1928), edited by E. A. Brininstool, also is available in a Bison Books edition, with an introduction by Richard N. Ellis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Land of the Spotted Eagle, January 26, 2000

This review is from: Land of the Spotted Eagle (Paperback)
This is the finest book I have read on the lifestyle of the Lakota (Sioux),people not only before European contact, but also how they dealt with their transformation into "civilized" members of the dominate society. It was originally written in 1933. Luther Standing Bear took his name after entering Carlisle Indian School. How sad that the newcomers to North America didn't take the time to learn the culture of the original inhabitants of this land. We would all be better off today if they had. This book gives much insight into why. Even at this late date, there is a lot that can be learned from "Native Wisdom." I highly suggest that anyone interested, read this book. It will touch your heart!

I enjoyed this book because the author describes Lakota life before and after the reservations. The book is easy to read. It was interesting to find Luther Standing Bear was among the first children sent to the White schools for Natives. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Lakota way of life or those interested in how the Native people adjusted to the reservations.

5.0 out of 5 stars There are still treasures on AMAZON, January 1, 2012

The new year of 2012 will be more of the same and Lakota people along with many in the U. S. continue living in a manner that is affluent beyond the dreams of the first nation people. The photographs and drawing in this book make it worth far more than the few dollars a seller charged. It is not only stamped with U S Office of education Washington DC but embossed with a Wyoming State Library of Cheyenne seal. Today, many of us read techincal 'books' on the net and skype action from remote sections of world into our homes, but the printed page still has much to offer. Standing Bear may not have been perfect and made his share of errors and I am glad that he got it all down before he left this earth..or did he?
