The U.S. Military has paid increasing attention to unconventional warfare, and low intensity conflicts. This 1993-94 study (by Dr Bauman at the direction of the U.S. Army General Staff College) makes a significant contribution to the field of unconventional warfare, and its special application to Afghanistan. The history of these wars includes material on battle tactics, force structure and capabilities, and strategic thinking. This study is the first study to provide an in-depth examination of the evolution of the Russian and Soviet unconventional experience on the predominantly Muslim southern area of the former Russian and Soviet empire. This study is relevant to a wide spectrum of civic and propaganda operations as well. The focus of this book is on the tactics & lessons of four historic military campaigns: 1. The Russian Conquest of the Caucasian (Caucasus) Mountaineers (1801-1859), the Russian Subjugation of Central Asia (1839-81), the Reconquest of Central Asia by the Red Army (1918-33), and the Soviet (USSR) war in Afghanistan (1979-89). Of interest to historians, military professionals, patriotic Americans, students of political science, and those interested in the Taliban and their region of conflict, the terrain and challenges of Afghanistan. Several Maps Included.
