Book Description

September 23, 1997 1566702593 978-1566702591 1
Using biotechnology to help control landfill processes can mitigate costs, shorten the time needed to process solid waste, and ease the typical ecological damage to the land being used. This first-of-its-kind book provides regulators, designers, landfill owners, and operators with information that supports the utility of landfill bioreactors and provides design and operating criteria essential for the successful application of this technology. It pulls together laboratory, pilot, and full-scale experiences into one concise guide to designing and running municipal landfills as bioreactors.
Landfill Bioreactor Design and Operation covers the history and background of landfill technology, research studies of actual bioreactor landfills, expected leachate and gas yields, specific design criteria, operation guidelines, and reuse of landfill sites to avoid having to establish new sites. For anyone looking for an alternative to large, wasteful landfill sites, this book provides a practical alternative to the problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Landfill Bioreactor Design and Operation, July 31, 2000

This review is from: Landfill Bioreactor Design & Operation (Hardcover)
Dr. Reinhart is one of the leading scientists in this industry and definitely a reknowned expert of bioreactor technology. This book has been extremely helpful in the development of our company's new strategic business plan for providing bioreactor services to our clients.

Dr. Reinhart and Dr. Townsend do a thorough job of identifying the major differences between current landfill technology and where we are going with bioreators. They provide data from ongoing studies which are critical in ensuring the design is correct. I was impressed with the depth at which the authors delved into hydrology and how critical the correct design for drainage is to the sucess of the system.

The trend in the landfill industry is going towards bioreactors but very few engineers are thoroughly up to speed on the many aspects and characteristics involved in the design and construction of these systems. These authors provide a good foundation to investigate this.
