Editorial Reviews

Universally hailed as a thrilling new figure in music for his edgy, lo-fi debut, The Headphone Masterpiece, back in 2002, Cody ChesnuTT is a soul troubadour whose frank, socially conscious ruminations on life continue to challenge popular notions of what modern soul music can look and sound like: a raw storyteller for the people wearing a guitar and a toothpick-chewing smirk; a wide-eyed, intense soul brother in a crazy-fly get-up singing about bedraggled love in the land of Lost Angeles - he's all of that, but wiser now while still wearing poetic license on his skin like a battle scar. The Atlanta native has always stood his own creative ground ever since he first holed himself up in his bedroom to record The Headphone Masterpiece, armed with his DIY musical arsenal: a drum machine, an array of instruments, a dusty four-track cassette recorder and a giant pair of headphones to block out the world. The result was an unvarnished collection of songs -- 36 in total, which alchemized his love of a multitude of styles: classic rock, rhythm and blues, pop, punk and gospel music.

This is album music, it is great, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great music, even if soul/funk neo-soul way cool guy in helmet isn't your thing.

If you love real Soul music, with real instruments (horns, guitars and bass a-plenty), meaningful lyrics, rich soulful vocals reminiscent of Marvin Gaye, then this is the album for you. "Landing On A Hundred" is Cody ChesnuTT's sophomore disc, and it opens with the joyous spiritual "'Til I Met Thee". The groovy "I've Been Life" (with a jam-session intro reminiscent of "What's Going On") finds him listing African nations: Senegal, Somalia, Swaziland, Togo, while "That's Still Mama" finds him singing "Church boy, school boy, dope boy, I ain't gonna throw my hands up, I'm gonna love ya".

Slowing the tempo down is the spectacular groovy Jazzy "What Kind Of Cool (Will We Think Of Next)", and the swinging "Love Is More Than A Wedding Day" which both sound like leftovers from some Marvin Gaye session. "Don't Follow Me" is a trippy ballad with funereal shuffling beats, muted sax sounds and quivery effects, while the autobiographical "Everybody's Brother" finds him singing about turning his life around, from smoking crack and gambling, to teaching kids in Sunday school, "And I'm not turning back".

"Under The Spell Of The Handout" is rollicking Blues shifting tempo briefly to a Jazzy break. "Don't Wanna Go The Other Way" (with the lines "I'm trying to hold on, trying not to fall but I feel like I'm losing it, help me God") is an urgent Funky number. The breezy "Chips Down (In No Landfill)" and the Funky "Where Is All The Money Going" both take a look at life in hard times. Closing is "Scroll Call" which sounds like a tasty jumble of Blues, Jazz, and Afrobeat.

This is real soul.

Cody delivers the goods on his first full album in 10 years. Landing on a Hundred has got to be one of the best CDs of 2012 and is filled with real soul music. This album is an instant classic in my opinion and reminds me of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder with a little sprinkling of Lenny Kravitz and Terrence Trent D'Arby, but of course has Cody's own unique styling and poignant lyrics. Lyrics that are real and timely and meaningful. I love the full band sound with the horns. Well worth the wait. Let's hope it's not this long before we get another full length CD. You were missed Cody. Glad you are back and alive and vibrant and filled with incredible music. Cody just landed on a 100% review. Get it.

Ok, so I was not a fan of his first album - barely listenable. But, this one is an actual album with songs with melodies, substance, and best of all..........his amazing unique voice. Love it. Keep it coming Cody!

Anyone who has been a fan of Cody since his first album the Headphone Masterpiece will quickly realize two things with his new album: (1) He has grown spiritually and (2) his music is far more polished.

We all grow up and venture down new paths in life. Cody Chesnutt has grown spiritually in his Christian faith and it is evident throughout the album. His music has a much more polished sound and includes live instruments and background singers to accompany his guitar playing.

The music is a refreshing break from the over-sexed music pumping the airwaves these days. This album gives us a man who sings with conviction and isn't afraid to be transparent with his struggles and growing pains (unlike many who feel the need to project a false sense of male bravado). Hence the album's title: Landing on a Hundred. In other words, being 100% honest and transparent.

I absolutely love this album because it resonates with me and where I am spiritually and personally. Here is a rundown of the songs, along with my descriptions:

1. Til I Met Thee: Cody speaks about his conversion experience where he exclaims, "I was a dead man/ I was asleep/ I was a stranger in a foreign land/ until I met Thee." Cody reveals that he was burdened down and wandering aimlessly. Then he felt God's healing hand all over him and he hasn't been the same.

2. I've Been Life: Great upbeat song where he gives a shout out to Africa and proclaims that, since his birth (not sure whether he's referring to his spiritual rebirth), he's been "the greatest attraction on earth."

3. That's Still Mama: This is an ode to "hard-headed" young men who disrespect their mother (ignoring the first commandment with a promise: Honor thy mother and father).

It's been a long 10 years since Cody ChesnuTT released "The Headphone Masterpiece". For those of us who considered that a classic, this release will not disappoint. Cody is a true artist who makes music on his own terms and has no intention of following the mainstream. Fans should be aware, however, that a decade of life will change an artist's approach to making music.

It might catch fans off guard to hear Cody on properly recorded songs and with a band. The updated sound will grow on the listener fast though. Cody ChesnuTT's voice now sparkles like it never did before on a low-fi recording. Where the last album contained some rock influences, this one definitely has more of a soul feel to it. 10 years ago, one might encounter sporadic bouts of casual curses and humorous cockiness from Mr. ChesnuTT. Though he has grown out of this approach, his songwriting and vocals are still as genuine and potent as they've ever been. If anything, his talents and artistic intent are even more refined now.

On socially relevant songs like, "What Kind Of Cool?," and "Everybody's Brother," he reaches new heights in writing about the human condition. "Till I Met Thee" is the type of inspirational album opener that can only be the result of some intense soul searching. The blissful and romantic "Love Is More Than A Wedding Day" is a testament to how Cody's perspective of love has matured. The up-tempo "Where Is All The Money Going?" not only asks an important question in today's day and age, but the song is downright funky! It really showcases how the band adds to Cody's musical vision.

All in all, "Landing On A Hundred" is a triumphant modern soul record suitable for people of all ages. It showcases the growth and evolution of not only Cody ChesnuTT the musical genius, but also of Cody ChesnuTT the human being. It is most definitely worth the purchase.
