5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting variety of styles and moods
This album shows an interesting variety of Clannad's music and how much their music has changed over the years. I have several of their traditional albums and pop/rock albums, and this album has songs with a special style that kind of stands out in a way. The were the songs, "Fado", "A Mhuirnin O", "Of This Land", "The Bridge of...

2.0 out of 5 stars Celt-evator music
Sometimes, recommendations just don't hold up. Such was my experience with this CD. Having very much enjoyed the work of Enya, Secret Garden and (especially) Loreena McKennitt, _Landmarks_ seemed destined for a place of honor in my CD rack. Unfortunately, despite multiple listenings, I have to depart from the very favorable reviews here, give it a begrudging 2 stars,...

This album shows an interesting variety of Clannad's music and how much their music has changed over the years. I have several of their traditional albums and pop/rock albums, and this album has songs with a special style that kind of stands out in a way. The were the songs, "Fado", "A Mhuirnin O", "Of This Land", "The Bridge of Tears", and "Loch Na Cailli" that sounded very Celtic. There were some songs that sounded more like pop, such as "An Glean", "Court of Love", and "Autumn Leaves Are Falling". "Golden Ball" was an interesting combination of Celtic, jazz, and pop music. "Let Me See" stood out in a way because it is hard for me to describe it's style. One thing that I find interesting about this album is that they have done better in this album to have traditional influence than on any of their other pop albums. It used uillean pipes and low whistles, which gave it a traditional touch. It also used high-tech synths, which provided an interesting style in their sound. There were also many moods, like the soothingness of "Fado", the haunting beauty of "Loch Na Cailli" and "Of This Land", and the sadness of "Bridge of Tears". Maire had quite a bit of influence in the music, since two songs were written by her and she co-wrote one song. "A Mhuirnin O" went to a beat similar to that of "Against The Wind." Her Christian influence was noticable in "Of This Land" and "Let Me See." Overall, I must say this is a very good album. It has Celtic, pop, and jazz styles, soft moods, and many different influences.

One of my favorite albums. Wonderful, emotional blend of voices and instruments. I continue to be impressed by Clannad's exceptional, diversified musical talents: keyboards, string instruments, wind instruments - all employed with a gifted understanding of balance. The tracks complement each other, as they blend perfectly from one to the next. This album would make a friend of Clannad to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars For everyone who loves good music!, May 4, 2004
This review is from: Landmarks (Audio CD)
Clannad is a genuine Irish band, well known for their haunting music that is a mix of traditional Irish and modern pop and jazz styles. (As a footnote, the popular singer Enya got her start with Clannad!) The music itself is hard to categorize - would you like to call it New Age, or Easy Listening? Well, it's sort of both, and really neither. This is great music, relaxing and thoughtful, almost religious in tone.

I love this album, and enjoy playing it just about all the time. I highly recommend it to everyone who loves good music!

I love Clannad and hearing this album won the 1998 Best New Age Grammy Award is definitely a great honour for this band. Landmarks is a great album and I find A Mhuirnin O to sound very similiar to Against the Wind. Very soothing and beautiful, a must have for all Celtic fans!

I got my first taste of Clannad when I heard "I Will Find You" sound track in a movie that I don't recall. I missed the credits and was instantly on a search to find who the band is. Turns out to be Clannad. I then bought Banba. I loved it and still do. It is the BEST Clannad ever put out. Then bought Anam. Another fine peice of work. Landmark is, well, ok. Nevertheless, I give it 4 stars. I love Banba the best. I think it's the nostalgic memories I had listening to it. Good work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Landmark is a Landmark, December 1, 1999

I bought this CD awhile back, and I must say, it was worth the money. I have always loved traditional Irish/Gaelic music. This CD provides it with an upbeat set of melodies. I can't wait for their next endeavor. Now what I want to know is: When is Enya and Clannad going to have a reunion?

5.0 out of 5 stars I like Clannad, and I think "Landmarks" is fabulous., September 11, 1999

My first exposure to Clannad was "Love and Affection" from the "Anam" tape. It was playing in a store, and I kept going back in to hear more. I bought the tape and I was hooked- I'm a fan for life now. From there I went to another tape by Clannad, then Enya-- you get the picture. Hopelessly devoted. My kids used to tell me I could listen to something other than Clannad. (I do- I listen to Enya and Walela, too.) I bought "Landmarks" when it first came out, and again I'm blown away by Clannad's fabulous talent. Their music is something I never tire of.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth Irish sounds mixed with catchy pop, June 23, 1999

When I first heard "I Will Find You" one day in my friends room I fell in love with Clannad. I have Gaelic roots myself and their music makes my soul skip a beat. Landmarks is all I ever wanted. I think my favorite CD is Banba, but this is up there at the top of my list. Bravo Clannad!

Irish musicians at the peak of their ability. Beautiful songs, excellent variety. If you like the "smooth jazz" equivalent of Celtic, with musical ambience that includes synth wash, close harmonies, energetic instrumentation but without clanging, jarring amped up fiddle, whistle, etc., this music is for you.

One particularly moving, standout track that is one of the best they've done: Of this Land.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again, Clannad strikes gold!, February 29, 2008
This review is from: Landmarks (Audio CD)
Clannad's 1998 album, and as of this writing, their last proper-studio album "Landmarks" is a very respectable follow-up to their previous album "Lore" which I thought was and still is a marvelous adventure. Though the album doesn't quite stack up as high, "Landmarks" still manages to be a wonderful and touching album. The album has a slightly grayer mood as emphasized by the album cover artwork.

The opening track "Al Gleann" sets the mood of the album with a somber atmosphere and haunting echoing vocals that are typical of post-Fuaim Clannad. "The Golden Ball" is among my favorite song with a gorgeous and jazzy mood that reminds me of cloudy autumn evenings by the lakefronts of Wisconsin. The next two tracks are pleasant enough though sometimes get weighed down a bit by getting too close to sounding like elevator music at times. The closing track "Loch Na Cailli" ends the album on a hauntingly beautiful note with a very somber instrumental note similar to that of the closing track on "Lore".
