This book was first issued as a Bantam mass market in December, 1962, having Orlando Sackett as its narrator. According to the Louis L'Amour SACKETT COMPANION the time line of the story is 1873-1875.

This is essentially a story of Orlando's leaving the mountains of Tennessee, historical homeland of the Sacketts, with Falcon Sackett being the father of Orlando. Leaving the homeland with Orlando is the Tinker (Cosmo Lengro) a man who says little but knows much. One skill that the Tinker has is the making of excellent knives, and the details of the tinker's life are very much true to fact. Other true facts of the time concern Jem Mace, an English fighter; Cullen Baker, Bill Longley, and Bob Lee are also men of history and fact. Edmund Davis is a governor of the times, as are L. H. McNelly and Juan Cortina are all factual too. Louis mentions also the Henry Rifle and some of its history. These few mentionings of fact are among others in this book. Also included are mule raising and racing, bare knuckle fighting, and chasing after gold.

With the storyline and the many historical facts within this storyline this is rather enjoyable read from a still early Louis L'Amour. One that many readers, especially Sackett reader, will enjoy. Though not quite on a par with HONDO or SHALAKO for me it remains very good reading.
