An Excellent Read,

This review is from: The Landower Legacy (Hardcover)
My mother bought me my first Victoria Holt novel, "Bride of Pendorric," when I was in about seventh grade. I read "Landower Legacy" a few years later and enjoyed it much more than any of her other novels. I loved the character Caroline Tressidor. She is strong willed, independent, and right from the beginning of the story it is easy to see that she differs in EXTREME ways from her sister Olivia. She is not one to be taken advantage of, although she did make one mistake concerning a young gentleman early in her life...When she goes to visit her aunt as a young child, she encounters the Landower brothers who live nearby. She is very taken with Paul, although at 13 years old cannot do anything about it. Four years later when she returns to see her aunt, she again encounters Paul and this time she is old enough for something to come of it. Paul Landower is a man of mystery; he is an enigma. The tension between the two is what kept me turning the pages, both very attracted to one another and forced to stay apart...The secret concerning Caroline's past and the mystery that shrouds Paul make the novel exciting and suspenseful. Did Paul commit murder? You'll have to read to find out. Look for it at the library, it's definatly worth your time.

The Landower Legacy,
This review is from: The Landower Legacy (Hardcover)
It's funny that I saw another review that said "one you can read over and over again and not get tired of."
This is definitely one of those. Caroline is a heroine EVERYBODY can relate to in some kind of way. The characters in this story are all so REAL. They act just as we want real people to act and they don't let us down. The tension between Paul and Caroline is richly entertaining , and just when you think all is hopeless for them, the way is paved...and they don't even have to feel guilty about it.(We all love when it works out that way don't we?) My favorite part however is how Caroline get's a little sweet revenge on the lover that thwarted her earlier in the book....But I won't give it away! I highly recommend this book! Just FYI: Caroline did NOT marry Paul for money as was mentioned in another review. I noticed another reviewer also protested to this. It might have just been a title mix-up for the first reviewer. Caroline did not need any money. She was already rich by the end of the book. She married Paul for love!

One of her Best,
This review is from: The Landower Legacy (Hardcover)
This is the second Holt novel I ever read, and next to Mistress Of Mellyn and King of the Castle, it's right up there as one of the best. Victorial Holt's writing is so thought out and well written, you almost hear her voice. After every one of her books, I feel as if I just watched a movie, her characters take such form and her descriptions are so vivid. What can I say, close your eyes and pick anyone of her novels, you can't be disappointed.

Victoria Holt always tells a good story. This novel is one of her best. Protagonist, Caroline Tressidor, a young Victorian woman, after having her heart broken twice, concludes that she would rather be independent than exploited for money by ambitious men. A remarkable woman for that era, Caroline is brave, independent, and highly romantic. Readers will enjoy the fascinating characters Victoria Holt has created here, starting with Caroline's vain, selfish mother. Toss in a conniving suitor who drops Caroline after discovering she is poor then marries her half-sister who is rich. Add a wealthy, eccentric aunt, a brooding love interest, and we have an enthralling story. Anyone who enjoys romantic suspense should love this one.

Victoria does not run out of ideas in this book - one of my top three of her works. One event after another relevant event, holding my interest the whole time for her fabulous endings. I am grateful for the people who recycle and resell books like these. My paperback wore out so I was relieved to find a hardcover out there on Amazon. Love the big print books, too! Thanks.

I totally enjoyed this book! Victoria Holt was an excellent writer! I have recently discovered her works. I now comb the second hand stores, hoping to see one of her titles. I loved the heroine in Landower Legacy, Caroline Tressidor. She reminds me a little of myself. Also interesting were the characters Cousin Mary, Jamie, Jago, Rosie, Paul and of course, Caroline's eccentric mother. I like reading about women who are not afraid of being themselves. From the opening paragraph, the story holds the reader's attention. |
