More About the Author

I realized I wanted to be a writer at age eight, when I read my first Nancy Drew novel, The Secret of the Old Clock. Most little girl reach the end of that book wanting to be Nancy. I wanted to be the person who created the story!
The dream lay hidden for years while I became a teacher, married, had children...all the usual things. But eventually it re-surfaced, and I began to write, beginning with short children's stories for Sunday school take-home papers. It seemed a long time until that first acceptance, but eventually I began to sell. After some three hundred published short stories, I finally found the courage to work on the novel I'd always wanted to write.
Thirty-some published novels later, I still feel the same excitement every time I begin a new book--a mix of not believing I can do it combined with an overwhelming urge to see the story on the page.
A lifetime spent in rural Pennsylvania and my own Pennsylvania Dutch roots eventually led me to the books I'm writing now about the Amish. The Pleasant Valley Amish series from Berkley Books are longer, more complex emotional stories with Amish main characters, while my forthcoming HQN suspense novels are more adventure-filled books set in Pennsylvania Dutch country. I'm also writing a Love Inspired series, The Bodine Family, set on the South Carolina coast where we have a second home.
When I'm not writing, I'm busy with church activities, traveling, and spending time with my three children and six beautiful grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars The truth really does set you free ..., June 16, 2006

This review is from: Land's End (Lowcountry Suspense Series #1) (Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense #24) (Mass Market Paperback)
One year after her husband Mile's mysterious death on the island of St James--in what seemed to be a lover's tryst with the wife of wealthy industrialist, Trent Donner--Dr. Sarah Wainwright returns to the island to find answers, knowing those answers may bring her pain.

Trent Donner, however, doesn't want Sarah asking questions and bringing up painful memories he has tried hard to keep buried. And he doesn't want his daughter Melissa hurt any more than she already has been. So he does everything in his very far reaching power to prevent Sarah from staying.

But when Sarah's life is threatened, Trent soon comes to realize that she may be right. Someone is trying to desperately hide what really happened that night in the cabin. And he also begins to see that, while the truth may be painful, knowing it is the only way to bring true healing from the past for himself, Melissa, and Sarah.

This was an excellent read! The characters were well written and the plot threads numerous enough to keep me guessing until the very end. My only disappointment was in the last couple pages where I felt Trent and Sarah's relationship was wrapped up a little too abruptly. However, in the big picture, this was a very small disappointment. I look forward to reading future suspense titles by Marta Perry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish that more pages had been given to the truth about the scandal, July 5, 2010

This review is from: Land's End (Lowcountry Suspense Series #1) (Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense #24) (Mass Market Paperback)
I do love most of Marta Perry's writings. I really enjoyed her books set in Pennsylvania Dutch country.

This was as well-written as the others But I didn't find the character of the female protagonist to be as engaging as the male protagonist was.

Perry does make her characters so realistic that I found myself wanting to smack the crap out of several who were being unkind. On the other hand, it wasn't too difficult to figure out who the killer was. The main surprise (and not given many pages) was the actual truth behind the scandal. That was a twist I didn't see coming and I wish that Perry had spent more on it.

A decent beach read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Scandals and Secrets, October 20, 2006
This review is from: Land's End (Lowcountry Suspense Series #1) (Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense #24) (Mass Market Paperback)
Confused and angry, Dr. Sarah Wainwright returned to the Georgia island of St. James in search of answers to her husband's mysterious death--in an apparent lovers' tryst with the wife of wealthy industrialist Trent Donner. Anger seemed to be the only edge Sarah had - Trent's control of the island and his protectiveness for his young daughter were enough to drive even this scandal back into the shadows.

A man whose life depending on keeping his secrets; a woman whose future depended on learning the truth--could her quest set them free, or would it destroy them all?

My favorite moments in Land's End were spent living in Marta's fictional world. The beautiful and lush part anyway. Some sinister and creepy moods also loomed a little too realistically in her narrative. Her word tapestry transported me to the deep south.

I won't give away any plot by sharing the following word weaving.

" A dolphin lifted from the water in a perfect silver arc, and her breath caught in her throat...Sunlight was warm on her shoulders, accentuating the golden haze that gleamed from the sand and sea oats. No wonder these were called the Golden Isles."

"The drapery of Spanish moss seemed to stir at her passing and then swing down, hiding Land's End from view, like Brigadoon vanishing into the mist."

"The rocker squeaked slightly, and a breeze off the ocean lifted her hair and bent the golden sea oats on the dunes. Bougainvillea rioted over the latticework that marked the end of the veranda, and sunlight danced on the water. Only the humans were miserable."

"Evening hadn't brought much coolness to the air once she'd gotten away from the shore. It clung to her, heavy and oppressive, as if she wore a wet, wool blanket.

With enough twists and creepiness to keep the suspense lovers happy, Land's End also offers a sweet love thread that is of course satisfying to the very end. Maybe similar to the southern version of iced tea -- sweet tea.

So if you like your sweet tea with lemon or your romance with a twist of suspense, this should go down real easy. Curl up with Land's End in your favorite rocking chair, on your wraparound porch, next to the climbing roses - just don't do it after dark.
