Show Me the Meaning!,
By JohnMatthias "Eric Giunta" (Tallahassee, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Landscape of the Body. (Paperback)
P>The play is a dark comedy/murder mystery. A woman is accused of murdering her 14 year-old son, and an introspective investigation (guided by the suspect's deceased porn-star sister) is the plot of this play. The characters are diverse, from confused kids who seduce homosexuals and steal from them, to hard-core porn stars. From a Cuban transvestite to a deranged Ice-Cream man. The play does not by any means glorify the immorality portryayed in it, but still, it's not one for small kids. It takes a lot of thought, even soul-searching, to figure out the "meaning" of the play. Brilliantly, John Guare leaves this aspect pretty open-ended, so its open to a variety of interpretations. For instance, mine is rather pessimistic, but my director's is one of hope. I understand this is one of Guare's lesser-known works. I haven't read his other ones, but I'm told this is one of his best-written. I wouldn't call this play a "must-read" (which is why I give it four stars, instead of five) but it is an enjoyable one, one that could be an impetus for some serious introspection and soul-searching. |
