The Landscape of Qualitative Research, Second Edition, the first volume in the paperback version of the The Handbook of Qualitative Research, Second Edition, takes a look at the field from a broadly theoretical perspective, and is composed of the Handbook's Parts I ("Locating the Field"), II ("Major Paradigms and Perspectives"), and VI ("The Future of Qualitative Research").

The Landscape of Qualitative Research, Second Edition attempts to put the field of qualitative research in context. Part I locates the field, starting with history, then action research and the academy, research for whom?, and the politics and ethics of qualitative research. Part II isolates what we regard as the major historical and contemporary paradigms now structuring and influencing qualitative research in the human disciplines. The chapters move from competing paradigms (positivist, postpositivist, constructivist, critical theory) to specific interpretive perspectives, feminisms, racialized discourses, cultural studies, sexualities, and queer theory. Part III considers the future of qualitative research.

The Handbook of Qualitative Research, Second Edition is widely considered to be the state of the art in evaluating the field of qualitative inquiry. Now published in paperback in response to the needs of classroom teachers, The Landscape of Qualitative Research, Second Edition will be an ideal supplement for a course on research methods, across a wide number of academic disciplines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Qualitative Research - Saving Thinking from Science, December 2, 2009

What is qualitative research? This book aims - and succeeds - in providing an answer. In a nutshell, qualitative research seeks to provide a more complex and rich description of human behavior than traditional quantitative research, with its emphasis on "verifiable" numbers and statistics. As one researcher has said, "Quantitative methods can tell you the median age of people who watch Star Trek, but it can't tell you why they watch it or what it means." This collection of essays by leading qualitative researchers and theoreticians defends qualitative research as an acceptable scientific paradigm - indeed, one more suited to explanation than narrowly defined "science" itself.

Particularly helpful are Denzin and Lincoln's introductory chapter to qualitative research itself; Thomas Schwandt's chapter on constructivism and interpretivism; Kinchebe and McLaren's on critical theory; and the concluding chapters on the future of "messy writing" in science. Recommended for academic practitioners - an excellent text for a graduate-level course in research as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Denzin's and Lincoln' Landscape of Qualitative research, November 4, 2009

The text is unique. It takes a look at the field of qualitative research and naturalistic inquiry from a broadly philosophycal perspective and competing paradigms. In our quanititave tecnocratic society such a approach is really needed. This book is of particular value in public health research and policy, where technocratic approach is dominant.
In my opinion any research have to start with describing the landscape od an research problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Both a wide-ranging survey and an up-to-date source book, July 18, 2009
By
Ralph Beliveau (Norman, Oklahoma USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of three large paperbacks that are the components of Sage's extensive and essential Handbook of Qualitative Research. This volume presents the most thorough theoretical survey of qualitative research that I have read or taught. Denzin and Lincoln's historical view of the field in the introduction and conclusion create a deep contextual understanding of what has been and is now at stake in qualitative research. The volume includes two other aspects that are essential: seeing research as it relates to higher education, and a consideration and critique of research approval bureaucracies (like IRB's) that are sometimes hostile to qualitative work. While many many other books can offer recipes of how one can do qual, this one sets out the "Why?", and the research work out of it flows. It also offers a consideration of the challenges faced when you want to use your own cultural assumptions to study another culture, rather than learning of their own ideas of how things work.

Each chapter also functions as a thorough bibliography of the area under consideration.
